Guns make me embarrassed to admit I’m an American when I’m meeting international people all over the world doing business trips. I’m so ashamed. It’s the first thing strangers ask me about when we meet. “What about all the guns?” I’ve probably been asked this same question 200 times.

Today, every single year, american buy somewhere around ~20-22 million handguns and 8-10 million long guns rifles/shoguns. by comparison, all US police, federal law enforcement and military procures under 100,000 long guns a year. The world's military/police forces on a good year procures ~300-400k long guns a year. The american civilian procures more long guns than the entire police/military of the planet by somewhere close to 15-20 to 1.

CIA estimates back in the 90s that the soviet old coldwar stockpile of AK/RPKs/SKS during the coldwar was about 50-75 million, maybe 2/3 still functional

American in the last 20 years have stockpilled somewhere close to 60-80 million semi auto rifles. american civilian arsenal is starting to dwarf that of the soviet stockpiles

Criminals remove serial numbers from handguns.

They way you do it is to begin drying up the supply of criminal guns - Massive crackdown on straw buyers and problem gun sellers.

Bring some actual responsibility and accountability to the "responsible gun owner" mythology:
Require mandatory check EVERY TIME a gun is transferred, even private, with serial number et cetera stored in a searchable database. That way, when a gun is recovered connected with a crime, the last known owner gets charged with, at a minimum, involuntary manslaughter. Responsible gun owners should know where their guns are and keep them locked in a safe, and if they get stolen, report it immediately.

And include psychiatric profile, history domestic violence or anger management, et cetera. And serious consequences for not complying.

That will eliminate all of the loosey-goosey gun transfer crap and make it harder for criminals to get guns.
