Be real. He broke the drive thru menu screen at a McDonald's and some glass entrance doors. Those aren't really "lock 'em up" crimes.
It's a good argument for broken windows policing.
He's mentally ill, and clearly needs more care. It's not to punish him but to enable him to function.

Randomly and unprovoked.
I'd be in jail if this happened to me.
Did the dog die? How horrible!

I can’t stop thinking about this young man. He sounds like an incredible human being, following in the footsteps of the Franciscans to serve those in need. What a senseless, heartbreaking loss.
Wow, I didn't realize that was his motivation. What a good human. Unfortunately, people who serve in at-risk communities put themselves at risk often times. I say this as someone who did similar work years ago. It's gotten to danger levels I've never seen though. I think these agencies should shutter in protest, that would send a message to the politicians if they all closed the doors and put up an explanatory sign. Much like the restaurants that are saying that staying open in DC has become unworkable for them. They need to put their employees first--they did not sign up to be Marines and they don't have the training or weapons. His poor family. Where are the protests in which the community organizers pour into the streets, the hands up don't shoot?
He is white. The community organizers don't care.
And chances are his race played a part in why he was targeted and attacked.

The kids doing the crimes in DC aren't mental ill, at least many of them are not. The guy who stabbed the dog, yes. The carjacking teens? No, mostly not.
Studies have shown they are.
If you truly believe this, they should be put in youth hospitals for the criminally insane with interventions until a panel of experts determines they are cured and socialized.
