But you did have Irish-Italian mixing. And German Catholics could intermarry with Polish Catholics, as they did in the midwest.
It was really the boomer generation that crossed the ethnic and religious divides in meaningfully large numbers. And boomer children were starting to be born in the 1970s and onward. And I would not be surprised if this is a factor behind the slight reductions in average heights.
That’s an interesting point because I read a study years ago that said that, when you control for nutrition and health factors, the only ethnic group that is markedly a different height than everyone else is Northern European Scandinavians, who really are measurably taller on average than everyone else.

I notice most people that are tall tend to be an outdoor type of person. Or at least when they were growing up, when you grow the most during your childhood up to your 20s.
When you get old, you just start shrinking.
