I have tattoos. I see many professionals with them. I think it gives away your SES class when you see them, depending on where they are and what they are. Some are “classier” than others. But other indicators - car/truck, eyelashes/nails, clothing also give that away.

My niece got a sleeve when her mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to express her love for her parents. Not because of body dysmorphic disorder. A family member has a primary care physician who also works out, tons of muscle, leads community walking groups to encourage people to get out and move. And his forearm is tattooed.
They're not all that cheap either.


Sorry about her mom’s cancer… but how does a tattoo sleeve express love? Was it her mother’s dearest wish that her daughter get one? Otherwise, it speaks more to a (rather narcissistic) bid for attention.

I doubt that. Personally when I see tattoos on skin, from a distance they just look like a blotch on someone's skin. I'm glad my DS has never gotten one.
But maybe men no longer wearing long curled wigs and high heels like they did in France a few centuries ago also represents a decline.

I imagine some future generations will do something else, but you might not like that either.

Some of us grew up when only biker gangs and prisoners had them. They make my skin crawl. The worst are sleeves.


To me, tattoos show disrespect for your own skin. Unlike jewelry, or clothing, or makeup, tattoos are permanent. Isn’t the skin that you were born with beautiful enough? It shouldn’t need any permanent ink. Why anyone would get a tattoo is beyond my comprehension.

In my mid-50’s, I am just amazed how much American society has changed in my lifetime - and not for the better.


If you are a woman, hopefully you haven't pierced your ears. That is permanent and shows disrespect for your skin. Do you color your hair, that is sort of permanent and shows disrespect. Do you do anything not permanent to disrespect your skin such as makeup? Everyone has a different definition of beauty.


Pierce earringa can close over and colored hair doesn't last. Tattoos are more pernament

But there's a very large percentage of people 35-55 who have them. Myself included. Usually, they are pretty discreet. You would never see them in a work setting.

For gen z, it's not typical. Maybe because they've seen how tats fade over time with their parents. And it's not an interesting way to rebel or self-express anymore. Which is good. The rule we have is no tats until you are at least 40. Not like anyone is clamoring, but them's the rules.

Pretty much, especially tattoos that are visible all the time. It's good if you want to call attention away from other features. Same with lots of piercings.
