VK is very good. My understanding was that LO was the reason so many 09s left last season, not MV. Maybe that was wrong.

I’ve played and I’ve never heard of this. Usually there is a designated taker or group of takers regardless of who wins the pk.
It's been around forever and is an old German superstition. Less common now than a generation ago, but it's still pretty prevalent and even if not followed, pretty well known, so not surprised your DD's coach would say it.
