Walmart today only had self check out and all but the one at ended up with had a scanner table that was so filthy it looked like it had taken part as a p0rn film location!

Back in the last century when I was a cashier, I always started my shift by cleaning the damn glass. I would also doing throughout my shift!

I love self checkout for small trips.

For large shopping trips- like a big haul from the supermarket- UGH. Yesterday, our supermarket only had one actual cashier working (and like 10 self checkout stations running) but I had a fairly large amount of groceries. This either forces me to wait in a long line for the actual cashier, or go to the self checkout and try to pile all of my groceries in a too small space.

Unless there is a bagger I prefer to move things sling & bag myself

I can understand why some people like self checkout when the cashiers are so slow. But if you have ever been to an Asian grocer, there is no way you would prefer self checkout. Those cashiers are lightening speed. I always wonder why other stores cannot replicate this.

I love self check out. What I REALLY want is for Wegmans to bring that their Wegmans Scan ap. I could have everything bagged and ready to go by the time I got to self check out for payment.

What's the point of self-checkout when the shelves are empty anyway?

In that PP’s defense, if the grocery store is going to enforce an item limit, then they need to have more than one manned cashier line open. That’s on the business and not customer.

The Walmart self checkouts are the worst. They are so sensitive and set for those who use turtle speed, apparently.

I sat my reusable bag down and scanned one of my 4 items. It threw an error. The monitor came over and asked if I placed something in the bag I didn't scan. Nope, I scanned my box of tampons, see the screen, ma'am. She reviewed the camera footage at the register and it was because the sensor caught the motion of me placing my bag down and thought it was an item. Fun. She cleared that error and I scanned the next item and placed it in the bag and scanned item #3 and it threw an error again. The lady came back and said I was too fast. I needed to scan, place the item in the bag, pause, scan, etc.

Like does this lady have to come and clear every error when someone places their bag in the checkout area? Because I live where we have to use our own bags or pay .05 per bag and I'm not doing that nonsense.

Not that rule, no. I'm not standing in a line that's 9 people deep, most with packed shopping carts because I have 22 items. GTFO.

Rules are not laws. Rules are guidelines.

I was going to say… without self checkout, the target checkout line would be the store length long. And sometimes it is anyway.

I detest self check out but use it if I have 4 or fewer items and checker lines are too long.

What I find interesting is the employees who either hover over you while you're checking out, or assist you during the check out process so end up doing pretty much the same amount of work as the checkers are doing.

I say get rid of self check out, give those jobs to the humans that need them!

Yes. When it was first introduced it was as you describe and I liked that. Then the stores went overboard. I'll wait in line now just to avoid the self-checkout.

This! I did not mind using it for just a couple of items. But now I don’t have the option, because many stores might have one or two cashiers and funnel everybody to self checkouts. I have to wait a long time to do the self check out anyway and I have a cart full of stuff and not enough room for my bags. Then, something doesn’t ring up or I have an issue. It’s absurd.

Stupid pointless rules? No they don’t.

I prefer self checkouts at convenient stores when I buy tampons. Nobody needs to see me buying tampons. And I'm an introvert and I don't feel like dealing with pleasantries, being asked to sign up for rewards cards, being asked if I want a bag or want my receipt, I just want to get out of there.
