OP here with a message to the fur is tacky crowd.

I went to the Kennedy Center on Saturday night to listen to Noseda conduct Wagner and stayed at the RC in Georgetown. I wore my new-to-me white fox. I logged no fewer than 10 compliments from a random woman in the RC elevators (she was wearing a vintage mink herself), more random women at the Roof Terrace Restaurant, random men at coat check, more randoms next to me in the lower box, and a cab driver. In addition to the lady in the elevator, I also saw tons of women in lovely furs themselves at the KC. Despite the cold weather on Saturday, I was also snug as a bug in a rug.

Fur is back, folks.

Wrong! I have a full length Christian Dior Mink vest/coat. I get compliments in DC every single time I wear it! It is gorgeous and very NOT DC.

I don’t care about fur. I probably wouldn’t buy one, but I don’t see how fur would make it to the top of my list of things to be upset about using any logical basis.

It’s relatively sustainable and the ethical problems are mostly solvable if you’re willing.

Since when? I don't drink alcohol at all and I don't smoke. Love my fur coats though.

Pleather and polyester fur is never chic. Sorry you have to vacation in Aspen. Ladies in Austria, Switzerland, France wear all types of real furs on a daily basis. I have several fur coats, including Celine shearling coat, and there is no faux fur as warm as those coats.

As it is, my 75 y/o mother has two inherited fur coats from her mother's generation. One was a very expensive mink, the other a lesser quality mink. She used to bring out the big mink for Christmas eve services but hasn't done so in a few years. Who knows what will happen to these. They are gorgeous.


I was in the Vicenza region of Italy during the holidays and I was shocked at how many women wore furs. Many women over the age of 60 wore long furs riding their bikes to shops in town and to the markets. A lot of 80 year olds wore long furs riding their bikes to the markets. I suspect these furs are worn every day, year after year and would have been very valuable when purchased. Eighty year old women in Italy saw a lot as children during WWII and post WWII Europe.


I like to watch Milan street style videos on YouTube. I see women of all ages wearing real fur coats and real fur trimmed coats in these videos. It is only a matter of time until this trend reaches DC.

I was coming on here to say the same thing. My mom (age 73) has not one but two she inherited, from her mother and from her aunt. So I would think people our age who are interested in real furs could find them easily from downsizing boomers and seniors, without having to kill a new animal. Win-win?!?!

That is very interesting. When I wear my furs, I practically have to beat the men off with a stick. Even when I’m with my husband. If we’re at a restaurant or in a store, other men will walk away from their wives (or dates) to walk over to me to compliment my coat. One man offered to buy my coat right there on the spot. Some ask to touch the fur. Men of all ages and races have responded this way to my furs. I have been wearing fur since my early 20s, and am now in my mid 40s.

Where exactly do you go wearing a fur? MGM? I can’t think of anywhere else. I wear shearlings by the way, they keep me warm enough and I am broke


I don’t live in the DC area. I have several furs, and I have specific furs for specific occasions.

Full length Demi-buff mink for church, holiday parties, date nights, and other formal affairs.

A vintage full length mahogany mink for work, shopping, running errands, and casual occasions.

A fox jacket for casual daytime activities, ie lunch or brunch dates, shopping, etc.

I have 3 knee length coats that I wear for dressier occasions when temps are a bit warmer (ie. above 40 degrees): a sheared mink and leather, a swakara with chinchilla trim, and a broadtail with mink trim.

I wear fur whenever I want, and as often as possible. I don’t save it for special occasions. In fact, I don’t save anything for special occasions.


I forgot to add: it is possible to purchase a beautiful, high quality, preowned furs at very low prices. Fur coats do not hold their value. And because many young people are inheriting furs that they don't want, and baby boomers are retiring and relocating to warmer climates, it is possible to find really beautiful furs at very low prices. I have purchased furs from local consignment shops and antique malls. And I have purchased furs online from Ebay, Poshmark and The RealReal.
