The Target near me (NYC area) has become progressively stranger in the merchandise they offer. I wanted plain long-sleeved shirts, one in red, one in grey. Not only did they not have any in those colors, there was a total of eight long-sleeved shirts available, all in XS or XXL. I am not talking eight different styles, I am talking eight shirts total. They had dressier shirts, hoodies, short-sleeved shirts, tank tops, and crop tops, though. It's the middle of winter! How can they not have long-sleeved shirts?

Target is increasingly overpriced anyway; don’t care if they go out of business.

This is the smart approach.

Why don’t they just do what the CVSs in NE do, and replace the goods on the shelf with a photo of the merchandise, then just store all the merchandise safely in the back storeroom.

Then, you can just ask for the item you want, and they bring it out to you.

The Target shutting down is Spotsylvania County Virginia. Not the border one.

The CVS and Walgreens that are shutting down are the inner city ones where people run out with armfuls of stuff to resell on the street. Haven’t you noticed the stickers on products lately with the store names all over the products? I’ve seen it at CVS and Giant. It’s to let people know that if they buy it off someone on Marketplace or on the street that it was most likely stolen.

They can measure the profitability of every store and it’s never just one thing that leads to a closing. The merchandising mix of a city store needs to be very different than a suburban store. If you get it wrong you have a problem. Is theft a bigger problem in city stores? It is for all retailers. Rent is much higher as well. Bad mix, higher theft and higher rent can swing a store from profit to loss.
