I’d reach our to vrbo owner and see if they are willing to let you switch to a different week - it sounds like school calendar isn’t an issue for you, so you can be flexible that way if not with respect to jobs.
Also, if your spouse’s type employment causes these sorts of things to come up time to time, in the future buy “cancel for any reason” trip insurance to protect your financial outlay.

If there is no landline, I'd look into a satellite phone. Our in-laws use one when they are camping and hiking in places without cell service for emergencies. I would go. It sucks that your husband can't make it, but I feel like if you want to make it work you can find a way to be "safe" and still have a great time with your kids.

Yes you are overreacting. I am shocked at the numbers of people who wouldn’t be comfortable going if you were into camping and cabin stays.
I never had issues “entertaining” two toddlers. The great outdoors is a great entertainer.
Some of you watch too much television and live your lives as if danger is lurking around every corner.
I mean how did people vacation and travel before cell phones? Getting away on a neutral territory sounds like an amazing getaway.
Sorry so many of you would cancel. $1000 is a lot of money!

The satellite phone is a good idea for cases like this if you're worried about emergencies.
It sounds like you have enjoyed staying in cabins like this before. I also enjoy getting out in the woods. In a case like yours, my anxiety would want me to stay home, but if I pushed myself to go, I'd probably get to enjoy nature, enjoy watching the kids explore outdoors in amazing foliage, and feel stronger and proud of myself that I did something I was nervous about and conquered it.
That bravely carries forward to the next opportunity.
It sounds like you have enjoyed staying in cabins like this before. I also enjoy getting out in the woods. Nope. Mask free. But a cabin in the woods with two preschoolers sounds like its own special hell. Add on to that the pressure fof being unable to call for help if needed. No, thank you.
If there's a landline that changes the equation somewhat. But if I had to choose between entertaining kids alone with the comforts of home vs some cabin the woods, you bet I'd stick with indoor plumbing, electricity, and internet.
