I hope you're spending plenty of time at the gun range. Too many people just take the basic training and leave it at that.

OP here. I really appreciate this question. I have thought about this a lot since deciding to carry. If it is my only option to protect myself or my family, yes. And still, I know my life would be changed forever. It's a terrible but important thought exercise I think anyone making the choice to carry should undertake with seriousness. I have decided I could live with myself and my actions under a narrow set of circumstances.

You sound very rational OP. I think you made a good decision. I hope you don’t have to ever use it.

When Martin Owe-Malley (the flush tax, the rain tax, etc) passed a bunch of laws around 2010 banning most rifles that were not HBARS (stupid because HBARS are still just as good as regulars) and banned magazine that held over 10 rounds, people in MD bought out the inventory for almost every gun retailer in the state. Leading old Marty to lament that adding more guns to the amount already possessed by MD citizens was not the goal and he wished the law had a mechanism to go into effect right away not half a year after it was passed and MD citizens could arm up even further. I remember standing in line at a gun shop in Baltimore County that was 30 people deep just trying to get in and get something before they were sold out.

We actually are in the majority. There is a small proportion of people, which owns a large proportion of the guns. It's been very lucrative for the gun manufacturers.

A pre-COVID, pre-Defund the Police study that gives a perspective on gun ownership in America - https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2017/06/22/the-demographics-of-gun-ownership/ the number of gun owners has only risen since the study was conducted.

DC requires training to get a CCW.

+1. Also proof of an unusual need. DC is very strict. OP is Lying

You are uninformed, or a propogandist.

Good for you, OP, stay safe. I have several co-workers and acquaintances, all Ds, who also got CC permits in the past 2 years.

I dont assume anything at all. I just know from experience. Your results may vary.

You know from your experience hanging out with gun people...

It's like skateboard people deciding that everybody skateboards.

Sure, I hang out with some gun people. Mostly law enforcement and military. But my circle of friends and such is not all gun people. I get asked alot by people I work with how to go about buying a gun and if it is that much of a pain as they here. I explain the process and they for the most part understand that in order to get one these days, they have to deal with the paperwork, training and fingerprinting.

I have been at gun shows and since I guess I look like I know something as I am just buying stuff without asking the vendor questions, people will just start asking me what guns they should buy as they are first time buyers and they don't know what to get or they are looking to buy one but they are quite nervous to do so.

If you think I am exaggerating, that's fine. I just know what I have experienced. If you don't like guns, that's fine with me too. I always tell people who don't, that's ok with me. They are not for everyone.

Most likely your own.

https://www.kff.org/mental-health/issue-brief/do-states-with-easier-access-to-guns-have-more-suicide-deaths-by-firearm/
https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2020/06/handgun-ownership-associated-with-much-higher-suicide-risk.html

Yes, someone taking appropriate measures to ensure their safety and life will do a 180 and commit suicide.

Do you people (liberals) even take a moment to think about what you are saying?

Do you people (gun nuts) ever take a moment to look at the statistics?

People who own guns are far more likely to die by gunshot and/or kill someone they know.

On the other hand, the number of gun nuts who have actually stopped a crime in progress can be counted on your hands.

OP, you really think you're going to whip that thing out and kill some kid? You said in your original post that you would happily give up your wallet and car keys, yet you will be standing in front of a criminal with a hidden gun. Are you really planning to pull it out and shoot them?

More likely, you will try to pull it out, they will knock you down, and -- you're another of the many, many, many gun owners killed by their own guns statistic.

I'm sure your family will be consoled by the fact that at least you TRIED to kill someone.

There are, at a minimum, hundreds of thousands of defensive gun uses in the US each year. Most do not require any shooting because the mere display of the firearm ends the criminal assault.

In Western Maryland and WVA most gun owners will call 811. Not 911 like folks in the city do!!

If you want to see people open carry, go to Charlestown, WV. I see it all the time over there.

Every time I consider getting a handgun, I worry that I might pull it out and shoot some a$$hole cutting me off in traffic or tailgating me. So I don’t.

Sorry, but as Ron Burgundy would say "I don't believe you" If you ever went to say Nations Gun show in Chantilly, you would see what I mean. When there is a booth at a gun show in VA that says "MD transfers" and its so crowded that people are waiting an hour just to set up their purchase transfer to a MD dealer, I would say you are not correct.

Yes, that is the small proportion of people which owns large proportion of the guns.
