I don’t have a kid there and don’t care if it’s declining, but please don’t use SOL scores to measure rigor in a HS. They are a basic competency test and most high schoolers don’t even take them. For example, students only take 1 math SOL in HS.

Except that the state sets teachers up by giving teachers little indication of what will be on the test. The sample test questions teachers are given to help kids prepare are from 2015.
Why should teachers be given the opportunity to prep the kids? This is supposed to test what they are actually learning in school.
Tell me you don't know how tests work without telling me you don't know how tests work.

Indeed it is interesting, although to be fair, you don't want to simply compare TJ to itself but compare TJs' slide to the slides of other schools. If you look at McLean's pass rates now, for example, they aren't what you'd expect for a top pyramid school. I had to recheck the data to make sure it wasn't an error.
While the county as a whole suffered losses, some schools didnt suffer as much as TJ in Math and Science where pass advance rates were essentially cut by 50% while a school like woodson was cut by 25% or even less when considering science. This wasnt the case for all schools though.

All that to say that a school like TJ would seem to be more likely to resist losses better than regular schools not worse.
Also interesting was, and this isnt scientific, but looking at the year over year, TJs pass advanced rate continues to drop from 2019 to current vs other schools who dropped in 2020 and then shot back up.
I posted on this above. It's true some dropped more or less than others but TJ isn't alone in dropping as much as it did (and, conversely, in increasing its English reading pass advanced rate). McLean dropped in math and science by 41% and 34%, respectively, while TJ did at 42% and 36%. Madison and Langley barely dropped in math.
Why attribute it to the schools though? What matters is what happened when schools weren't doing their job. I suspect this is much less likely to be about TJ (or McLean) than about how families in particular demographics addressed their kids' learning needs during and post pandemic.

TJ dropped more in science and math than some other schools but had farther to fall and the percent change is not much different than McLean:
TJ pass advanced rates from 2018-19 to 2022-23:
Eng (reading): 59.14, 93.62
Math: 91.35, 53.13
Sci: 89.83, 57.63
McLean:
Eng: 18.59, 50.87
Math: 31.76, 18.7
Sci: 38.75, 25.6
Not sure what to make of it, but I wouldn't be so quick to attribute this to diffs among the schools (vs diffs at home in how supported students were to catch up or repeat a year).
Also, looks like MANY schools' show a big uptick in the % passing advanced in English--reading. Anyone have any idea what that's about? Grade inflation?

FCPS used to release all this data on their school profiles. The state VA Dept of Education no longer allows that--they want to control all the data releases. Blame them not FCPS.
They never released individual scores. The other thing is if kids fail but make progress from previous year it counts as a pass.
They released all the percentages of Pass Proficient, Pass Advanced, and not Passing. CLose enough.
Yes, but these tests are unfair to ESL kids. So the data is skewed.
Some kids are exempt from taking them.
Very few kids are exempt - a tiny fraction of a percent.
Why does it matter? Because a PP was saying many ESL kids are exempt. Implying that schools with high ESL populations have a shot at a good score because so many kids are exempt. They are not exempt. It matters because kids who have been in the US less than a year are expected to take and pass these tests. It matters because kids who have been in this country 2 or 3 years are expected to take and pass these tests.
And when they don’t pass and a school with a lot of ESL students gets a low score everyone likes to say how bad the school is. Or how great their own school is when really it’s just a school of fortunate white, born in the USA upper income parents who succeeded in having a white born in the USA kid who goes to a school filled with other upper middle income white kids.
SOL scores mean NOTHING unless looked at in context.
Why do people like you have to always sh*t on white people? You could have made your same point without bringing race into it.

DP. But as a tax paying and voting citizen, the scores matter to me. I want to know how the schools in my community are, or are not, meeting the needs of all children. Shame on you.
Except you cannot compare a school that is predominantly white to one with a larger ESL or SPEd population. They are not bad schools, they just don’t have enough resources to help those kids.
Uhm yes, that’s my point. Show us the scores so we can think about where resources need to go!

LOL not really. FCPS is FCPS...you know how I know. I've taught all over the county in the last 20 years not much difference from Vienna schools compared to Chantilly schools.
