I'm a DP and while it was good, The Covenant of Water pales in comparison to Cutting for Stone.
But both fall into the longish-but-worth-reading category for me.

There is a line that so many authors cross. Yes, protagonists need lots of crap to overcome, but they also need happiness too. Scenes of exhilaration, happiness, growth, exaltation are all essential and keep us invested! Ugh

I read that as a teen. The only storyline from it that I can remember is Dorothea's. It was kind of horrible and heartbreaking and emotionally impactful. Nothing about the rest of the book can I remember 40 years later, other than the fact it was a massive slog to get through.

Lincoln Highway. I couldn’t get into it at first, but then loved it! I convinced a friend to push through too and she ended up loving it.

Pretty much every novel by Anthony Trollope - and he wrote around 40! I've read 18 and love them all.
