What is crazy to me is you have people on here telling you what these kids are doing. Coaches, teachers, other parents. Yes, 12 year olds. And yet you are so sure you know what's going on. The hubris in that is fascinating to me.
You cannot parent effectively if you don't admit that on some level it takes a village and you don't have control over everything and know everything.
DP. Hubris? At 12, the number of kids who have cell phones varies widely in different areas - which can be within the same metro area or county. At some schools, all the 3rd-6th graders have their own smartphone while at other schools, only half or fewer of the 7th graders have their own phone.
And sure, probably the parents of each group look down upon parents of the other, as harming their child by *depriving them of online socialization* *depriving them of IRL socialization*.

If you are Family Sharing (assuming you have iPhones) with them and someone in that family group has previously downloaded an app, anyone else in that family group can download the same app without needing parental permission.
This is how my child downloaded Snap without my knowledge or permission- I had downloaded it before and he was able to do so as well, without his child account asking for permission as it is set to do.

Same. Nor any other social media. And I’ve heard all the “but everyone has…” whining for years but I’m not budging. She will get social media around age 16 when she is old enough to have better habits around school and phone and in order for us to help guide her before she goes to college. Her phone and iPad are also set up with parental controls that require parental approval for any apps or purchases. Same for our younger kids. They could not download snap chat if they wanted to. They also know we check their phones and messages randomly.
Op, the lying and hiding things is a big issue that you need to work on now. It’s not going to be easier as your daughter gets older and naturally gains more independence.
And I also have an 11yo rising 6th grader who would probably be more likely to try to hide something like this but we’ve talked with all our kids about the issues with social media as well as the repercussions and consequences about lying so I’m not terribly concerned about her. I’m just saying I know some kids are easier than others about this type of thing, you just have to make sure to parent your kids appropriately.
Taking away screens for a month from a 12yo is probably a more annoying consequence than op wants to deal with, it’s not actually that hard for her kid.
I had a parent like this lecturing me about the evils of snapchat and meanwhile I know for a fact her kid is on snapchat and she is clueless.

Yes - as a coach to a group of 13yr olds, I know they all have SNAP and I think only 4 parents think they do. I act like I don't know but I hear them all talking and checking each other's accounts between games. It's always the parents that think their kids are perfect that go behind their backs. I mean we all did as teens. We all lied.
100% of my 12 yo's friends have Snap, though I know some of their parents think they don't. I've cultivated a relationship with my kid so he'll turn to me for help and advice rather than hide things from me. We at least talk about how to use it safely.

We always just made it that our kids had to get approval for any app downloads. Easy to manage.
