But Giant is getting stolen blind to the point where it is permanently closing half of the store entrances and putting armed guards at the remaining ones. The changes to the self checkout are aimed at minimizing the inevitable loss via limiting order size, and at catching people with the weight detector. I think other retailers are experiencing the same thing. There are people wheeling entire carts out without paying, and the present environment is so violent and so pro criminal that the stores don’t dare try to arrest them.

Just leave. Let the store have to discard all of the perishables and restock all of the non-perishables. If enough people do this, they'll fix the machines
Your tantrums change nothing, but hey, they make you feel good and that’s what’s important.![]()

Because we're not lazy.

Bullcrap. Self-checkout is the choice of the retailer and is obviously more prone to theft. There is an easy solution - bring back checkers.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:A sign at our local Giant said that the system updates are due to recent increased thefts so I believe the changes are at all Giants.
+1 you can avoid these problems by using the scanner
Giant could avoid all these problems by staffing their checkout lanes with actual people.
The self-checkout was fine when it was more convenient for the customer - i.e. - you needed a gallon of milk and it was faster to scan and pay on your own. But now it's just a degradation of service versus a convenience for the customer and a way of depriving a person of a job by the corporation. I feel like starting a movement to boycott self-checkout.

There's a key for "use my own bag" and then it asks how many bags you're using. It's worked well for me since the crackdown.
Come on people, we can learn this new system. I'm sure we can!

The new 20-item limit is fine for the small self-checkouts but my Giant also has two regular-sized checkouts (with conveyor belts, the kind where checkers used to work) set up as self-checkouts. That does not have the 20-item limit yet. If they try to impose it there, they will get reamed by customers. A lot of people use those two measly full-sized self-checkouts for larger amounts of shopping because most of the time, day or night, there are only ONE to two actual checkers working, and most often it's just one.
