You can get a ID without driving.

Wow. These posts astound me. I made my kids take the learner's permit test when they turned 15.5, had them drive me everywhere to get in their practice hours, and booked their BTW (includes final test for license) when they turned 16.

With that said, we live out in the Fairfax suburbs, and I am from Texas where cars (and lots and lots of pavement) reign supreme.

I’d rather have people with anxiety NOT be driving. Since, ya know, they don’t make good drivers.

People nowadays are afraid of the simple truths. Now that’s what I call pathetic!

I've intentionally discouraged my 18yo from getting the official license. He is a great driver but he goes to a college where few people drive. The minute he gets his license my insurance rates will go up by about 1/3 even though he is in another state. When hes home in the DC area he uses public transportation snd Uber to get around. It woukd be silly to drive into downtown and pay for parking. Even i take Metro.

Oldest son got his license at 21 or 22. We made him get an ID at 16, but while he did get his learner’s permit at 16, and he just never wanted to practice. He won’t admit it, but I think he was pretty freaked out about driving and scared of it. Honestly, he didn’t actually own a car until he moved out west (from large cities) at age 27, and he is a very good driver.

Middle child (daughter) couldn’t wait to drive and got her permit the first day she could, then got her license as soon as she could take the test. She had hobbies that she needed a car for.

Youngest is 20, and has no interest in a learners permit. We don’t push.

Driving is a life skill. Like swimming. Non negotiable. HOWEVER, a huge time commitment has to come from you. And you have to do it.
