Because I am not paying attention to you. I don’t even know you are there until I go to back out. Like dozens of other posters, I am dealing with and talking to my kids. Until my brake lights are on, I am not looking at other cars because I am not going anywhere.

Setting the GPS
Logging into the grocery app to tell curb side we’re in our way
Setting up Spotify and negotiating a dispute between my kids about what music we will listen to
Opening a juice box

Whatever I want actually. It’s my parking spot to use as long as needed whether I am shopping in the store or getting settled between errands.

But OP, I never assume that someone getting in a car is leaving at that moment unless I see reverse lights or them checking their mirrors.

Why don't YOU (general "you" who gets mad at people waiting for your closer spot) park further back? Maybe because it's raining or you have mobility issues or have small children or elderly with you, or maybe you feel safer, or just want the convenience of a closer spot.

Personally I only wait for a spot if the lot is full - seriously, have none of you ever tried to park on a college campus, downtown, mall at Christmas, etc. where "just park a few spaces down" isn't an option, and the only way you get a space - any space - is to catch somebody leaving?

The fact that not one person has responded to "why don't you waive them along" rather than ignore them while you set up a podcast, program your GPS, text your mom, eat your lunch, and put in your eyedrops confirms that this is 100% a need to establish some sort of dominance.

I usually leave right away if the parking is crowded and cars are waiting for spots.

Also because of the rise in carjackings lately, I no longer check my phone after I get in my car and just leave quickly.

I’m talking to my mom, about my kids. Who are at home with their dad. And after that picking out what i want to listen to while driving around the block a few extra times. It having a snack so I’m not a hangry b when I get home.
