When colleges say they want URMs, what they really mean is they want full-pay URMs who go to private school. When they say they want FARMs/first gen kids, what they really mean is they want ones that happen to attend magnet schools in a select few major US cities.
Inner city URM kids living in Buffalo, Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis or Gary need not apply, and the same goes for white kids living in rural areas where there are no magnet, charter or private schools around.
So much for DEI!

Agree. College admissions are the worst con artists. If they were publicly traded companies they should serve hard time at Club Fed for fraud.

They sure don’t host “exclusive virtual events” like what’s described in the email above.

We don't use FARMS, mostly because we've had free meals in public schools for 10 years+. We do have a mechanism for counting income, although it's imperfect.
Stuy's economic make up is roughly the same as the overall DOE population - or just a bit wealthier. It's not a title 1 school (cut off is 40% "low income"), which lines up with the data of stuy being just above the overall population. I think it might be hard to understand what real families make in nyc. 10% of the kids at my kids' schools (all title 1) are unhoused, which is about average. Stuy is mostly poor/lower middle class (with a lot of families working on a cash basis which is a whole other thing), but so is our school system.
LMC second gen asian girls are not living the "hooked" dream. They're just working their asses off.

Formerly rural who largely agrees with this. Yet the AD is probably reading apps from a range of NYC schools - not all of them are magnets.

I thought Stuy had consistent T20 admissions for the top 15% of their class? The class is 800, so lots of kids. But remember only 4% of applicants to Stuy are admitted, so it's a select group. The rest go to a lot of CUNY schools.

I'm a NYer and I think you overestimate how many Stuy kids are first gen. It's a small minority. Low-ish income: yes, many, but not Pell eligible. Second gen: sure, many, but that gets you thinking college-wise.
