PP here. Whoops, I read this as rising Jr. My current Jr did this last summer. And, also loafed around a bit and family vacay.

$6K for 2 weeks. Wow.

You are missing the fact that people on DCUM hail from all over the country. What you call “behind the wheel,” we call Drivers Ed. I am signing my rising 10th grader up at the beginning of the summer, and then we’ll spend lots of time practicing since her schedule isn’t busy.

This. My kids school does not offer any driver's ed. So if they want a license before age 18 they need to take an approved driver's ed class -- classroom portion + "behind the wheel" with a licensed instructor. And we parents have to do all the required practice.

we have this issue as well. why is 16 the magic age? Why would u need to be 16 to bag groceries? Dunkin said 18?!

Sports practice twice a week all summer plus a couple of competitions
One week of exploratory engineering camp at a midwest university
Two weeks of half day band camp at his school
One week of family vacation
Doing his summer reading, sleeping in, hanging out with friends

Hmm, my current sophomore at an HYP spent her rising high school sophomore summer as follows: babysitting, family trip to CO, ran a little field hockey "camp" at the park for MS school kids for a week with a friend, drivers ed, and then went into field hockey pre-season. Seriously, it was just a summer. She had loads of activities throughout her high school years (and has someone has mentioned above there are only 10 activity spots on Common App, most kids can't put everything they do) but please don't feel like the summer when you're 15 years old means anything for college admissions future. Make a little money, have a little fun, it's fine.

My kid will take Derivers-Ed in HS health class. Their high school requires all students to take PE and Health each year and Sophomore yr health is Drivers Ed.

Flying to Portugal, driving to Toronto, attending a music production class, going to the pool, taking the personal finance class, playing on their phone.

A tennis clinic for 2 hours per day to try to help him make top 6 on his HS team next year. Also, picking up our neighbor's kids from camp (walking distance) to hang out with them for an hour until she can make it home from work.

Isn’t the classroom portion included in Grade 10 PE/health class?

If you go to private school, you have to take the class on your own.
