The OP will need to become stronger. You should hear the crap that is said to me about my daughter with Down Syndrome. Folks will talk as if she is not there and as if she cannot understand. My daughter has become very good at defending herself. Proudest mama ever.

She did say in the OP that she said “that’s how she tracks her blood sugar” so she kind of said that, without explicitly mentioning diabetes, but the woman didn’t seem to care or respond.
I think people like this are so unimaginative and set in their ways and mindset that they literally can’t even imagine a 7 year old needing to monitor their diabetes. Like it’s so far outside the realm of what’s possible in their small minds that OP might as well have said that her daughter was, I don’t know, training to be the first tween astronaut or something. Unfortunately these people are everywhere in our society!
That woman is vile and clearly wasn't going to apologize no matter what OP said. But just because she didn't apologize doesn't mean she did not inwardly feel ashamed. Her silence after OP told her about monitoring blood sugar makes me think she was in fact ashamed (since she is certainly not the keep-silent type).

Agreed. I’m normally a very calm and docile non confrontational person. I would have explained, not nicely that that iPhone is literally the difference between life and death and before she starts judging others should should be very thankful that her kid doesn’t have a life altering disease that can literally kill you every single day. +1. I'm sorry, and I know the feeling of wishing later that you'd stood up for yourself/your DD. However, even if you gave the perfect response, I'm sure she would have glossed over the diabetes and thought "oh that's an excuse, just terrible to give a 7yo a smartphone."

I am so sorry you had to deal with this- people really do need to learn to MYOB. As a school nurse, I wanted to tell you how happy it makes me to hear how you are empowering her at a young age to manage her T1D. I have several kiddos in my care at school who do exactly what you are doing with their Dexcom/phone. I always monitor it during the day and so do they and it is really helping them to understand that they are in control of their care.
