Actually, on a different thread, someone analyzed whether the no fee application and no supplemental essay had an impact on Colby's number of applications, and apparently, it's minimal. Yes, they are marketing the school, but the reality is that donations that have led to a brand new gym, performing arts center, and a very strong President seeing through on certain programs, has made the college rise. Davis Connects pays for students to have global experiences and internships. We looked into this at other LACs and it simply wasn't as robust.

Have you seen their athletic center? It would put a lot of D1 schools to shame. Aren’t they building new dorms for next year? It’s a great school.

Colby gamed it. It’s free to apply and they sent all high school students tons of emails and fliers including unqualified ones just to bump their numbers. My DD said no way to that school.

The dorms were horrible apparently. No a/c, marked walls and everything needing a repaint. Bathrooms needed updating and the grounds were not well kept.

No air conditioning is a common problem in Maine during the summer months. Southerners have a hard time adjusting while on vacation in Maine during July & August. (Southerners are used to a/c.)

Colby is an amazing school. My DS planned to apply but was accepted ED1 at a different SLAC. Regardless, all of these schools "game" the system. I think NYU, Northeastern and Tulane are way worse.

F y i, my kid decided to ED to Colby, after considering (and having the stats) for many other LACs. Why? Because the investment Colby made in a number of areas far, far exceeded those other schools. (Performing Arts/environmental science, internships) Not even close for Bowdoin or Bates or Wes. So you can grumble all you want but the train has left the station for this school. The alumni donations have allowed them to turbo-charge the school, and this has changed many things. Folks who graduated years ago and faculty all have noted that it's in a different place and very competitive to get into.

If you do a google on Colby yearbook you can see the recent years’ senior pictures in the back sections and get an overall idea of the vibe at Colby. Looks like a diverse group of kids. It’s issuu. Pretty cool to have this at one’s fingertips!
