Anonymous wrote:Working class who are just barely making ends meet (but without assistance) are the most bitter toward welfare. I was raised by parents like this. So much disdain for welfare because they worked very hard are still only had barely enough for the same existence. Back when grocery stores started allowing credit cards in my childhood, my mom totally judged those people and told me that anyone who used a CC couldn’t afford their groceries. It’s funny how the world has changed.

Genuinely curious if they were bitter toward all people on welfare or just black people on welfare?

It’s not the first time cashiers have try to embarrass people out loud.

I would have asked to see a manager if I had witnessed this. Cashier should have been fired on the spot

Yes please answer- what do they receive that they're not eligible for? How are they affording a pool and steaks "all summer" with government benefits? Can you explain further?

PP noped out after they were asked to provide facts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, every poor person has the latest iPhone and eats avocado toast all day. I assume your role in the hospital didn’t require much critical thinking.

40% or Americans pay no federal income tax at all. And it’s not the middle class. So please GTFO with that.

Thanks for making my point for me. They pay no income tax because… mortgage interest deductions.

* should have clarified: some have income too low to pay taxes. But others take that mortgage interest deduction and don’t have to pay either.

Are you serious? You are comparing homeowners with people receiving public assistance? Gtfo

NP. Government money is government money.

Homeowners contribute to the state through taxes and etc. what is the contribution of a welfare recipient and their families? Please help me understand

Most welfare recipients are employed. They pay taxes. What part of that don't you understand?

Hmmm, do they receive a tax refund every year? I sure as hell do not. I'm confident they do. Not np.

+1. Keeping some of your own money is very different than get someone else’s hard earned money through redistribution.

Spin. Spin. Spin. The poor are keeping some of theirs too. You are on the dole, sir. You get government aid just like they do… well actually a lot more.

What aid are they receiving? How much do they get each month?

I feel bad for both of them really. People supporting themselves on walmart cashier pay, and people shamed for paying for groceries with an EBT card ("welfare").

+1
This exactly. It reminds me of the anger directed at airline staff when we should direct our frustration to the CEOs and lawmakers with power to change some of the horrible policies.

Americans need to keep up the myth that poor people are irresponsible, criminal, and completely undeserving of government subsidies so that middle and upper class people don’t feel bad about poverty and the government assistance they receive. Middle and upper class people are hard working and therefore deserving of the government aid.

Even if dc lifted the 5 year limit, for the love of God take a peek at the requirements and the low amount you can receive. Nobody is thriving on tanf their entire lives.
You must have children (that homeless guy under the bridge doesn't qualify), you must engage in searching for work/training activities, and, for example, a family of 4 can receive $850 per month MAX. And that's high. It varies by state.

But…but…someone’s insane MIL told me on Facebook about seeing someone buy lobster with food stamps that time! Surely ALL people living below the poverty line are doing exactly the same thing?

Actually only DC and Tennessee (I think) are the only two states/places that do direct cash assistance. Most states don’t spend their TANF money or do marriage counseling or abstinence education with TANF money.
