+1 Every day I walk by my bank branch with billions in assets and a large "END RACISM" sign on the door. There is zero probability that the sign does anything to stop racism. It is only supposed to signal that the bank is one of the virtuous corporations. This is what I think of when I hear the word "woke".

I recently came across the land acknowledgment for the University of Maryland, which in part reads, "We are on the ancestral lands of the Piscataway People, who are the ancestral stewards of this sacred land." (https://diversity.umd.edu/resources/land-acknowledgement) The statement is again just virtue signaling. It is not like the University of Maryland is going to return any lands to the Piscataway People.

I believe that if one examines the 8 billion dollar a year DEI industry that the majority of examples would be similar performative nonsense.

This is a valid definition and frankly as a more conservative democrat, I agree with it. But why couldn’t Bethany just say something like this? (And don’t say because she heard Brihanna Joy Gray “badmouthing parents”)

Uhhh, no. The point is "woke" is more expansive than just identity politics, unless you count "good card carrying liberal" as an identity. Ukraine, gun control and climate are not really identity politics, but are frequently referred to as woke.

But why does this bother you so much? I agree the sign actually accomplishes little and the bank is likely a hypocrite on the matter. But it’s like reduce reuse recycle signs. It creates over time a new consciousness. Which again is useless unless paired with action.

The land acknowledgments. Australia does this at the beginning of every meeting. Again not going to change anything but it is nice to honor our past. Again why does this bother you so much that anti-woke becomes a rallying cry and you then have to show proud and out racism to declare your fealty to your tribe?

Oh that’s true. I was two weeks overdue with all three when I had my abortions. My doctor, er, sorry, my midwife on my commune, was going to induce me but I was like actually I just decided at 42 weeks to not be pregnant. So I had abortions instead. It’s not just a Fox News fever dream, that’s 100% real life!

(In reality I know ONE woman who had an abortion, she was 24 and early enough along she could get the abortion pill, but to hear Bethany’s ilk tell it, every single liberal woman is waiting until they are 27 weeks to even consider abortion.)

What makes me sad about Bethany is that she does this for the attention. Years ago, I worked for a public health organization, and a fairly liberal one at that. She had a wonderful op-ed in the Washington post that we all loved about how to incentivize and increase childhood vaccine rates. Once she realized she got more money and views and clicks by being anti-vax, she decided to walk back her stance.

And as someone else said, she clearly reads here, so Bethany if you even try to say you aren’t anti-vax: You recently posted on your children’s book review account about “woke messaging” spotted at Barnes and Noble and one of the “woke” books you spotted was a board book about why it’s important to go to the doctor and get vaccines.
