I agree. We were just there in December and I felt like I was holding my breath the entire time. I was also uncomfortable in the town of Dachau (not just the memorial site). I do not understand how people can live so close to a place of such horror.

Ditto! We walked from the train station in summer trying to imagine how horrible it was for so many to walk in the freezing cold with little clothing/footwear. It was a long walk. Then, once there, too many people were taking selfies. The place is so spooky.

The small towns of Eastern Tennessee. The mountains are beautiful but the poverty is devastating. The large population of MAGAs sadly doesn’t help either.

Santa Fe. I LOVE Santa Fe so it's not a bad creepy, despite all the questionable history there ... to me it is dense and feels a little "off" for a lot of reasons.

Were we on the same road-trip, in the same car? Stopped on the way to Nola, driving straight through on the way to Mardi Gras, of all of the sights I saw that week, Miss. gas station pee break at 4am was by far the strangest and otherworldly experience. Many, many lifetimes ago it still sticks with me.

I’ve also had this experience, specifically in and around Jackson. We used to drive to and from Texas every year. When we had to stop and get gas my husband told me to lock the doors. The only hotel I’ve ever checked into and then left was in Jackson.

Racist much?

Has nothing to do with that, and more to do with the people loitering in the parking lots and panhandling/approaching your vehicle in the middle of the night.

Ok, this is weird. I'm casting a 3rd vote for Jerome, AZ. We only stopped there because it's DH's first name, and we left soon after because we were so creeped out. He wouldn't even have his picture taken next to the "Jerome" sign. He just said, "let's get the hell out of here."

I loved Jerome! Didn't get this feeling at all.

Weird how liberals hate poor people so much.

No what you feel is enslavement. Probably ancestors of former enslaved people —haunting you if you’re white. I’m Black and never felt this way there.

Terezin concentration camp in Czech Republic in 1996. I visited on my own and went into the underground tunnels that led from prison to outdoor where executions took place. Can’t remember exactly. The tunnel was lit by some lamps on the wall but it was still dim. I didn’t realize how long the tunnel was -it seemed like 15-20 minutes. Whatever it was, it was a really long time to be walking alone through a dimly lit tunnel in a former concentration camp to the site of executions. No signs or anything to make it more “touristy”. No one else going through the tunnel. Just me. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Hiking in the woods around a lake in Yellowstone. I kept sensing there was something stalking us. Maybe it was all the warnings of grizzly bears but it completely creeped my husband and I out. We were hiking with our then 5 and 7 year olds. I will never ever hike there again.

I remember feeling deeply freaked out in Cooperstown NY. I cannot explain it. It just felt lonesome.

At the baseball hall of fame??

Same. It was eerie and beautiful and depressed all at the same time.

My kid is really into trains so we did a weekend drive to Cumberland. I knew nothing about it beforehand drove in on the wrong side of the tracks, and it was definitely off in a methadone clinic on every corner of way. We ventured over to the cleaner side of town and it was nice and felt much safer. Spent the afternoon railfanning safely across the tracks fro the scary people.

The kid loves, loves trains but it freaked him out so that I can’t even get him to make a return trip.
