Just another reason not to own a car in DC

Agreed.

Buy a tank.

You can park it on the street too, like this guy: https://www.foxnews.com/us/texas-neighborhood-tense-over-world-war-ii-tank-parked-outside-multimillion-dollar-home

You’re insane.

How nuanced of you. I haven't walked alone in a park like Rock Greek or Archbold Glover, with no sight lines and lots of hiding spots. I've obviously crossed, I don't know, MacPherson Square. But you do you. Enjoy the early morning jog.

I’ve not given it any thought. My night vision isn’t great, so I avoid driving at night, but no. And if they’re doing this at 7pm, what makes you think they wouldn’t do it at 3pm? Just stay home.

You’re actually FAR more likely to be a victim of a carjacking than to die in a car crash.

Annually, there are an average of a few dozen fatal car crashes in DC and each of the surrounding counties. Eliminate drunks, and reckless driving/street racing or crashes that occur because of the driver doing something hazardous, and the number is even lower. Maybe a couple dozen region-wide.

Compare that couple dozen to multiple hundreds of car jackings every year in the region.

So yes, you’re far more likely to be carjacked than die in a car crash.

500 carjackings in DC last year alone and 2/3 involved a gun.

Reported as a gun held to woman’s head.

Again, not midnight. Not 2:45 AM. Just after dinner time. Terrifying.
While I realize it gets dark earlier now, I’ve made it a point to go to CVS, Giant, gas station. etc. in the daylight. ATM use aside, I never gave much thought to running the typical evening errand. Until this winter.

I agree. I also agree that the spate of attacks against cyclists on the MBT is a reason not to own a bicycle in the city.

The city needs to provide free ebikes to disadvantaged youths. They’re only stealing bikes because they need to ride to school or one of the 7 or 8 jobs they have to support their families.

It has made me reconsider unnecessary trips to DTSS at night, I must admit. Particularly with my kids. I never felt unsafe there (used to work in DTSS for years) but the recent incidents have left me a bit edgy.

Or perhaps not ride up and down the MBT. Rather unfortunate that such a great recreation option runs through such a terrible part of the city.

Or just don’t own a bike? Sure fire way not to get attacked.
