JMU is a great school and the first choice of many applicants, but it's long been a safety for high performing in-state students whose first choice is UVA, etc. and for whom OOS isn't a viable option for financial or other reasons. My kid was accepted at W&M, but would've happily attended JMU. And yes, merit aid at some OOS schools could make the cost similar to that of JMU, but the OOS schools in that "tier" are, generally, not regarded as any better than JMU.

JMU is a very popular "safety school" for a lot of kids I know with weighted GPAs of 4.0--4.2. They generally applied to UVA, W&M and VA TECH and a couple of OOS schools as well.

This. DS had a 4.2 and applied JMU as a back up/financial safety. His 1st choice was Virginia Tech and he's there now. Also applied to a few OOS schools and got merit. If he'd not gotten into VT, I'm not sure which option he'd have gone with. JMU would have been significantly less expensive than the OOS w/ merit.

JMU's 75thile GPA = 4.12 so those kids in the 4.0-4.2 range will have plenty of company. The top 25% of the student body = about 1200 students.

Accepted!! OOS, male, 4.3, 32 ACT, 11 APs, varsity team captain, Boys State. So, so happy. Congrats to the other new Dukes!

This has been discussed in many threads. JMU is the first choice school for a LOT of kids. It has something for everyone. Just because you don't "see it" doesn't mean a lot of others don't.

FWIW, I read on JMU Admissions site that applicants that are not accepted Early Action are deferred unless it's clear they aren't competitive applicants, in which case they would be denied.
