Capitol Hoops runs a summer league at DeMatha that many of the top schools in the DMV play in. They don’t seem to have a JV league which is a drag.

More Than Basketball used to do leagues at Wilson that had varsity and JV for summer and fall, and playing for their school’s JV team was a great way for rising freshmen to connect with the team before tryouts.

NOVA Cavs runs a summer league for varsity boys teams and Wakefield HS runs a fall league. Centerville HS runs a fall league for girl's varsity and some years JV also.

What club does he play for? Do those kids filter to a certain private or WCAC school? Has he been at clinics? Did he get interest from high school coaches at those clinics?

FCPS has a rising freshman league, but not ever school participates for boys and girls

It seems like — unless they recently moved to the DMV —- most people with a really talented kid kinda know some of these answers by spring of 8th grade. DS wasn’t a superstar but did get moved up to varsity his freshman year at a local highly competitive public. And he had met the coaching staff and worked out at his in-boundary public, two application-only alternatives, and a WCAC school by spring of 8th grade.

You should definitely look to have your son playing summer league for whatever school he wants to play for this spring/summer.

I’ve heard that some NoVA high schools allow rising 8th graders to try out as well.

We live in Arlington. I know of 8th graders playing high school football but no info on basketball. The Arlington middle school basketball season, like other school sports , is short. Do any of the Arlington schools open freshman tryouts for 8th grade and if so, which schools?

Try transferring to Hayfield or PVI. They have good basketball programs.

Bumping this because it seems like rising freshmen leagues are starting up. My DS is zoned for Robinson Secondary School, how is the program? It seems like they have been very bad for years, would it be worth trying to get him to a different school?

NoVA teams may be "decent" but not good enough for HS (and AAU) players interested in getting college coach attention at any level D1-3. Also, some area coaches actively assist their players with college recruiting while others clearly do not.

We are zoned for Yorktown HS in Arlington. I believe the recently departed coach Joe Reed admitted that in his 8 (?) years of coaching, only one player lasted more than a year playing college ball (can't recall if D1, 2 or 3). I don't know how many players were actually recruited. On the other side of the county, I think a serious baller would have better luck getting college coach (any level) attention at Wakefield.
