My DS's friend had his heart set on UVA his whole life and ended up with a 4.1 GPA which he knew he wasn't going to get into UVA with. He made a plan to go to NVCC and do guaranteed transfer. Fast forward a year, he did great at NVCC and transferred after one year there and is now at UVA and a year ahead of my kids. Worked out perfectly and he knew what he wanted.
That said, most of their friends are just as happy at lots of other schools, so its really not the only option that will make your kid happy.
I’m the PP. Glad your boys love it. I hope you raised them better than most of the boys that my girls came in contact with. One of the things they liked the least about the school was the guys. They thought they were generally too fratty and immature.
Oh I have a DD and DS there and my DD says the same thing about the boys for sure. That said, my DS still has his girlfriend from high school and all his roommates have long term girlfriends. I keep telling her she's just looking in the wrong place but that is her big complaint for sure. She's a second year and and she told me this week she gives up. "All men are dogs"

She was an UMC white girl with no hooks, average excurriculars, a weighted GPA of just over a 4.0 (9 or 10 APs with plenty of Bs) and had a superscored SAT no higher than the mid-1200s. Granted, she got in off the waitlist, but still, I’m sure she wouldn’t have a prayer today.
Oh, and for what it’s worth, she ended up doing just fine academically, has lots of good memories, made some good friends that she still keeps in touch with and is happy enough that she went there, but all in all she wasn’t blown away by the experience. Her older sister feels exactly the same way.

Though there were 800 more applications this year, UVA accepted 50 fewer kids. I wonder if the application quality was down or if they have capped the percent of class admissions from ED.
EA was up as well and since it’s the strongest pool, perhaps they wanted to leave more slots open.
Or, more kids thought TO combined with ED was an easy admit. Maybe it wasn’t. UVA will announce in January what it’s doing with TO for next year. Hope they get rid of it or find a way to qualify it, like the submission of AP scores.
They would be an outlier if they get rid of TO

True but UVA likes to do its own thing.

He has a fighting chance. My DS got in last year with a 1480. But all his friends have different SAT scores or GPA. UVA definitely is looking for a certain type of student that isn’t just numbers. Good luck!
