Agreed. I don't know that it's the city so much as the industries and neighborhoods where these folks work and live. There are places and people in DC who don't live their lives this way. I know it's hard to leave professional networks, etc, but it is possible to have a nice life here.

This is true. DC just takes a different approach to meeting your people than other places. Basically when you are walking the neighborhood or out at a store your eyes will light up when the person you are engaging with is not a total tool or jerk. Good example is Starbucks where you and one other person are the only people in line not to complain about your special request drink or the person who gives you a head nod when you refuse to continue the "pay it forward" crap.

You grass is always greener people are insecure. Take hold of your life. DC is an educated place with lots of different personalities. If you can't find your people here I predict you will be miserable wherever you go because you simply care too much about the BS and reject your own people.

It’s so funny the different perspectives. I’ve lived in:

NYC (my 20s)
London (2 years early 30s)
DC (10 years years 30s-40s)
Boston (40-50)

Honestly, DC was the least stressful job I had with the best hours that paid the most.

NYC - long hours but fun

London - long hours and stress

Boston - a true grind and horrific commute.

I love DC, locals are down to earth and friendly in my experience. People who complain about it are usually the same people participating in the problem. Take a risk and live the way you want, whatever that means to you. Only one life.

Norway is just too damn cold. It makes Maine seem like Florida!

But the quality of life there is higher.

Not if you have a white collar job here. It is higher if you work at Burger King. Norwegians have crazy amounts of mortgage debt, lower salaries and pay a lot in taxes for government benefits. There is pressure to conform and less freedom to do what you want with your life. Lots of rules and laws to protect you that can make your life harder.
