Regardless their chief role is supposed to be serving as an information conduit for their neighbors to understand what is going on in the community and interact with the government. It appears that they instead are trying to control the flow of information, which is sad. That is why they should be abolished. They are abusing their limited role, so what’s the point of having them?

The election was about a lot more than bike lanes. Funny you say Siddiqui’s opponent spent a lot of money when Siddiqui and so many other ANC candidates doing GGW/CPSG’s bidding are heavily funded by Greater Greater Washington, Cleveland Park Smart Growth, the bike lobby, and the developers who stand to gain $$$$ from development not just on the avenues but up and down the residential side streets. There is a link on GGW website to fund Siddiqui and some of the other candidates GGW endorses.


What development is taking place on the side streets of a historic district where almost all of the houses are contributing structures?

The Macklin, first block of Newark St off Connecticut Ave. Developers citing 3 small apartment buildings on Rodman, Macomb, and Newark as precedent that should allow them to build apartment or luxury condo buildings on the side streets in that neighborhood. They’ve been eying historic Cleveland Park green spaces for a while.


Umm the Macklin is literally on Connecticut Avenue.

And FWIW is much smaller than the small apartment buildings you are referencing which have co-existed with 2 million dollar single family homes without incident for 90 years!

Elissa Silverman lost a lot of votes not as she claims because big money funded an opponent but because of the way she supported the ANC redistricting task force which was to many observers undemocratic. She didn’t want to hear why DC residents objected to the gerrymandering taking place, the tilted composition of the task force, and she sent obnoxious responses to voters who lodged complaints. That kind of treatment turns people off. I voted for her in the past but not this time and never again.


This. I was really turned off by how she conducted herself in the redistricting meetings.

The election was about a lot more than bike lanes. Funny you say Siddiqui’s opponent spent a lot of money when Siddiqui and so many other ANC candidates doing GGW/CPSG’s bidding are heavily funded by Greater Greater Washington, Cleveland Park Smart Growth, the bike lobby, and the developers who stand to gain $$$$ from development not just on the avenues but up and down the residential side streets. There is a link on GGW website to fund Siddiqui and some of the other candidates GGW endorses.


What development is taking place on the side streets of a historic district where almost all of the houses are contributing structures?

The Macklin, first block of Newark St off Connecticut Ave. Developers citing 3 small apartment buildings on Rodman, Macomb, and Newark as precedent that should allow them to build apartment or luxury condo buildings on the side streets in that neighborhood. They’ve been eying historic Cleveland Park green spaces for a while.

This is just asinine. No one was even thinking about bike lanes in these elections. And the leading progressive on the city council was defeated. The city council is going to swing back towards the center after all this.


The republican candidate literally had it on his signs and he captured a few votes.
Several ANC Commissioners made opposing them the cornerstone of their campaigns, most of them lost.

I think most people think of ANC representatives as glorified 311 operators.

That is literally their job. Except there is somehow the belief among the urbanist crowd that ANCs have real political power and somehow winning an ANC election (or for the vast majority being uncontested) provides some sort of broad policy mandate. It’s totally crazy and honestly getting so out of control that they should just be abolished.
