Everyone's relationship is different I guess, but even pre-kids it would have been weird if we were both in the house and DH just up and left without saying anything.

I think most of these responses are huge overreactions. Yes, spouses should communicate their whereabouts if young kids are involved. And DH and I usually do tell each other where we are going. But if our kids don’t need care (because they are at school or whatever) we come and go freely. If his car is gone and he hasn’t texted I assume he just went to run an errand and will be back within an hour or so. And he always is. Fortunately we have this level of trust and understanding and don’t need to monitor each other as much as many of you seem to.
