I chuckle when people say this. I was at Giant today…literally the same brand of lettuce, strawberries and bananas that I buy at Aldi. I think the strawberries were $4 today. I bought them at Aldi for $1.25 about a week or two ago. It’s ridiculous to make it sounds like it’s a gross place with awful food. It’s from the identical supplier as other stores, inc Whole Foods for some produce.

glad you like it. it's for you, not for me.

And this is why I chuckle.

Why? Because you save $1?

No, because you don’t for a wrongly perceived reason. The people I’ve heard from who don’t shop at these places (other than for location reasons), do so because they think they are above a store like that, but bundled in a pretext (all their produce is rotten, they don’t have anything there, etc.). I have enough money to shop wherever I want, but who wants to pay more for the identical things? Makes no sense to me- and it makes me chuckle to myself.

If you don’t get how saving $1 here and there has a massive cumulative effect, then…

Most people (including myself) who don't shop there have shopped at least once. It's not perceived reason, it's based on experience. But, regardless, why do you have to judge people? If you like it there, by all means, knock yourself out. Nobody said anything negative about people who shop at those places, keep your feelings to yourself. Keep your $1.

You’re last sentence belies the rest of what you said.

?? wut?

You say: “…why do you have to judge people?…Nobody said anything negative about people who shop at those places.”

And then say, “Keep your $1.”

Your last sentence showed YOU are judgmental, which is what you’re criticizing others for.

NP - there were several posts calling it "low class." I'd assume some judgment there.

Well there is such a thing as low class. Also upper class. I think we can all safely call Whole Foods an upper class shopping experience (or used to be, anyway). Why can't someone say they feel that Aldi is low class? So what? Who cares?

NP. Low class isn’t the same as “not expensive”.

I realize that. I've been to Aldi and it had a distinctly low class feel to it. I went to one in a low class area, though (Langley Park I think).

Could you please stop using the term “low class?” It’s offensive, and ironically has the effect of making you seem…well..you know….

Why is it offensive? Have you ever been to Langley Park? Are you really trying to tell me it's not filled with poor people?

Omg. Are you equating low class with poor people?

Please tell me you're joking, PP. Or are you saying we don't equate "upper class" with rich people? You are trying WAY too hard.

My bad experience at that store follows close to others on this thread, but also includes my strong dislike of their check out system. OMG. Never again will I go there. NEVER.

Go to Aldis.

Is the issue that the cashier flings your items at you and then immediately starts checking out the next customer while you are still trying to pack your items?

Yeah, not the PP, but I hate that too. It feels like you’re a street urchin scrambling for coins thrown from passing cars.

Think of it as a cultural experience because this is exactly what it's like in Austria or Germany.

Ha ha. Yes, it is, but Lidl there is the same as Lidl here. If you want to pay more for the same goods, you can shop at another grocery store. But the Lidl checkout in Germany is so much faster than here.

A much better term is “no frills.” That’s what it is. The poster who essentially said the employee-angel parts the clouds as she goes to find the strawberries clearly likes the frills.

Aldi and Lidl are known for low prices bc they're able to cut costs in other areas (employees rotate, no customer service desk, no real shelving/just boxes, bags cost money, bag your own, 90% house brands, etc).

The downside is there's no deli, fresh bakery, limited selection, and sometimes items are out of stock. (at least the one in Burke).

pros/cons.

And no self-checkout! That's the biggest con at the McLean location.

I was surprised that there was no self-checkout at the McLean location. There's one at Ashburn, which is a nicer store. The McLean location did have four checkouts open, which I've never seen at the Sterling location. But the price of half a gallon of whole milk is 60 cents more in the McLean Lidl than the Sterling Lidl.

Really? I wonder if they're inflating/deflating prices based on zip code.

Most grocery stores do that. Zone pricing.

There’s no class superiority in overpaying for things. But so many on DCUM know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

That's why their brains cover up the real reason (as you stated it) and instead claim it's dirty, gross, the food is bad, they can't find strawberries, etc.

Well the one I went to was disorganized and gross and smelled strongly of rubber, and none of the food looked good enough to buy. Sorry, that was my actual experience at the one Aldi I went to.

I know it was. And others who shop there have a completely different experience. This is why my statement stands.

Yes, but the point was that I'm not covering up the real reason. That was the real reason. I even posted upthread that I'd be willing to give it another try if any of the products sounded interesting.

I don't understand why some people are getting their feelings hurt over opinions about a store they like. I shop at the Dollar Store. But I can see how someone else might think that's low class.

Which location did not have food that looked good enough to buy?

I think it was Langley Park.

Totally your brain telling you that. I know it feels real.
