Subject: VA residents - I had no idea house prices were this high!
The housing in VA tends to be newer and there are lots of people who will pay a premium for any newer house.

But I have an awesome brand new McMansion and only had to fix the replace the foundation and roof not to mention a 2 hour commute in bumper to bumper traffic.
Plenty of jobs in Reston now. 10 minute commute.

Yeah and that's "45" minutes to the entrance to the parking garage in DC. Not including 15 minutes to park and get up to my office.
And don't forget paying for the garage!
Toll road is what, $5 each way? 66 is variable, but let's call it $8 on average. Parking is another $20, so $46 every day, or $966 a month.
For almost $1,000 you could have just paid the extra to buy a place that's not Herndon.
Fair points, I guess, but I live in Herndon and ride metro. So it's $5 for parking at Wiehle-Reston, a 42 minute train ride that drops me at Metro Center, 1 block to work, and $12 for Metro round-trip. So $17/trip in pre-tax dollars. I will admit it takes me 10 minutes total to drive from my kid's daycare and park in the station, then about another 4 minutes to get to the platform. And I get to work almost that entire time, so don't waste my workday in traffic.
Plus 0-20 minutes waiting for the train each way, so 60-80 minutes each way, or 2-3 hours commuting per day.
And most of us don't have the luxury of counting our commuting hours as work, regardless of any work that may or may not get done, so that part is completely irrelevant. Unless you're saying you work your full 8 hours in addition to the work you do on your commute, in which case, congratulations on giving your employer free labor. Not sure I'd be too proud of that myself.
I download the Metro app and know the train times pretty well, so I haven't had to wait more than 5 mins or so for a train. And no, I don't work my normal work day on top of train time. It's included. But I do recognize that many people do not have that option.

Houses in Herndon are between $700,000 and $1.5 Million right now. If that's affordable to you, then kudos to you for marrying a lawyer.
There are townhouses in the 400s and split level sfhs in the 500s (town of herndon). I think you married the lawyer, friend.

NP but I live in a townhouse and agree it's not a real house, LOL! When you say "house" I assume single family home. I cannot afford a single family home in Herndon - my townhouse in Fairfax would sell for about $700K, but with interest rates, I want an SFH that I don't have to renovate for around $850 and that is very, very, very hard to find in a decent school zone. And no, white and UMC do not make a good school district. My kids go to a minority white school that has a great reputation, teachers that stay longer than just one year, and gets good test scores across all demographics.
NP. I disagree. A townhouse is a house. Hence the word “house” in it.
There are plenty of townhomes that have more space than SFH with a one/two car garage.
Sounds like you live in one of those older tiny townhomes in Herndon that don’t have a garage.

NOVA is overall more expensive because of economic growth. Comparing the state of VA (large) to the state of MD (small) is ridiculous. Fairfax county is the richest or one of the richest countries in the US. Yes unfortunately prices are high.
