If building luxury condos, dog parks, roof decks, pop ups and the like increase home values, so be it. Let the market work as it should. Chill out on all the rent control and DCRA bureaucracy as well.

It’s pretty simple. But, as studies show, humans are biologically programmed to root for the underdog, so anything I say is met with reflexive shock. How can this poster be so cruel!!!?? Think of the poor families…no dude, if people can’t hack it, they can move like everyone else. We should have some to of social safety net, but not tons of ineffective programs funded in perpetuity that show no signs of abating poverty. I like the paid leave proposals for maternity leave and some summer jobs stuff, but seriously we can’t subsidize the same generations of families in projects in perpetuity and claim it’s unfair no to.

Although I find this perspective repellent, I appreciate PP laying out there in all its insular, racist, misinformed glory. It represents a real and not uncommon set of beliefs that people who watch a lot of cable news (not just Fox) believe. A lot of wealthy white people don’t like seeing homeless people, conflate homelessness with crime, and believe that violent crime is surging when in fact it remains at historically low rates.

The San Francisco example is instructive. Homicide and violent crime rates are actually down there, while property crimes are up. Obviously, property crimes affect quality of life, but the idea that SF is some violent hellscape is completely unsupported by facts. And to the extent that property crimes are up, it’s funny how progressive DAs and policies get the blame, but no one wants to talk about the incredibly low rates of crime-solving by police. Did a great job getting vaccines out? It was a SH*TSHOW. I drove up to Pennsylvania to get mine after waiting weeks and not being allowed to sign up since I was in Ward 3.

Everyone I know got theirs in Maryland. Either Salisbury or 6 Flags.

Maybe first few weeks, but for the people that had a tiny bit of patience, DC came with a vengeance and outperformed MD and VA within a month. Many Va and Md residents were coming to DC for vaccines and always came to DC for testing. I’m pretty sure I’m voting for R White but Bowser did a great job with COVID.

She could have done better but she did a good job. People like you were not going to be happy unless you were first in line. It seemed like ages, but it actually only took weeks before everyone had access. I am also impressed by the fire station testing she set up, and now the covid centers. Anyway, it was the progressives that insisted that vaccines should be allocated based on factors other that eagerness to be first in line. If we left it to progressives like R White claims to be, Ward 3 would have had to wait longer.

Yes, I agree that nothing under Bowser has been perfect. And the covid response was still pretty good. When I compared our access to vaccines, PCR tests, rapid tests to some adjoining counties, we were actually way ahead! I can be pissed now that schools were closed so long, but I admit that at the time I didn't want to send my kids. I was scared of covid! My teenager didn't want to go at all, and my elementary kid was learning online ok.

On schools, Bowser tried to open in Nov and I give her credit for that. Then she continued to push for Feb by getting teachers vaccine access. One of the most interesting political things she did on schools was give principals a lot of individual discretion in reopening. This meant that schools could be flexible based on what the immediate community would accept. The downside to that was that some principals were too conservative; but in places where parents wanted their kids in school, it happened. Given the failure in Nov, I think this was the best way to get kids back & demonstrate it was OK and safe.

+1, and the point I was trying to make was that her plan in November was terrible and it took a coalition of principals and teachers to prevent that plan from happening. If we want to credit her with being flexible and "responsive" we should also note that it was her lack of responsiveness that caused the initial issues and current ongoing wedge between families and teachers
