Our pediatrician caters to upper class people. Enough with these middle class people arguing that the uncircumcised kids belong to poorer parents and that these parents would circumcise if they had the means/education.

If circumcision brings any benefits, it does so in those countries where hygiene and condoms are harder to come by… this should not be the case in the US.

Except it is factually correct that when Medicaid dropped coverage for infant circumcision the rate among the poor dropped too.

I’m a pediatrician and I work in a suburban area with specific demographic (at least one parent works in tech, affluent, millennial age parents, mainly Indian and Chinese, and some white). It is rare to have someone request a circumcision these days. Usually it’s the white families who have bigger families.

Nearly all the parents we know circumcised their boys, but don't usually post or share because it's private decision and the anti-circ crowd is very loud even if they are a bit of a minority.

My husband and every adult male I knew was circumcised and all said they had no regrets. My husband said he appreciated it was done for him as a newborn before the procedure became complicated or he could remember it.

My college roommate did have one ex who was not circumcised and had to have a procedure as an adult due to some issues he developed - he told her it was traumatic. So saying you wish to let the boy choose when he grows up can be unfair as the procedure is so much more painful and risky if you wait until adulthood.

My 11 yr old isn’t circumcised. His dad is.

He is on swim team, goes to (non-religious) sleepaway camp, and has zero problems or insecurities undressing or showering around others. His lack of circumcision has never come up as a problem.

I don’t believe hospitals should do it without a parent present. But then most of them would halt the surgery before it was completed. It’s nothing short of torturous. Please just watch it happening.

So if you go with it, at least have the guts to stay to comfort your newborn son.

They put a numbing agent on the tip and then a local anesthesia for the whole penis. For my son, he can back from the procedure nurses and slept. No screaming.

I mean if you want to have to deal with nagging your son to remember to wash underneath his foreskin for the first thirteen years of his life because you couldn't be bothered to listen to the CDC and you wanted him to be "natural" then that's your right, but don't be surprised when he comes to you in tears asking you to pay for it when he's a teenager because some girl rejected him because of it and told all of her friends and now all the girls at school are calling him anteater.

I remember reading these threads late in pregnancy with my son. I simply couldn’t decide and the nasty comments and warnings on both sides didn’t help.

I knew I didn’t *want* to circumcise but was terrified of stigma and my son resenting me. I was uniquely upset about it since I have experienced shame around a gynecological issue and the last thing I want is my child being teased. I ended up not circumcising. At about six months I again read these threads and worried I’d made a huge mistake, even researching surgery on older infants.

I broke down in the pediatrician’s office. He has never shared a personal anecdote in the years I’ve known him (I have an older daughter) and he shared that he didn’t circumcise his sons. He is all American, straight laced, country club, etc…I was surprised and so grateful he shared. He said he had never seen a patient regret it or have an issue (he treats adolescents in his practice) and that these days a son could be equally upset that a parent did do it than if they didn’t.

After months of worrying, this conversation finally put my mind at ease that my choice was reasonable and more common than I thought. It was just one person’s opinion (and I wish I had confidence without it!) but it gave me closure.
