Yes we both have jobs and are projecting $400,000 next year not this year.

The inheritance will be split between the siblings, her sibling and various charities.

Oftentimes, gifts are given early to help manage an estate and allow children to enjoy that windfall while the giver is still alive.

I wasn’t thinking of getting the entire amount early; just a gift to help us with a down payment to get a large home. 4,000 square feet is fine. We just need more room.

This is often incorrect: my 86-year-old widowed mother has monthly income of $15K from pensions, RMDs, Soc Sec, etc. that will all stop when she dies. None of us will end up richer if she dies sooner rather than later.

Darn. I am a teenage immigrant. I took loans to pay for college and grad school. Once my single mom got on her feet, she helped as much as she could. She is doing well now but it would never occur to me to take her money - she worked very hard and she deserves to enjoy it. And I have a 4500 sq foot house - I worked to save for a down payment and took out a mortgage. You have to play the hand you are dealt and play it well, not count other people's money. Your MIL doesn't even have to leave anything to your DH.

OP's MIL would be well-advised to not eat or drink anything that OP serves, or walk ahead of her DIL going down the stairs.

If she wanted to gift you now, she would. If she has a good tax advisor then she’s being appropriately briefed on how to manage her finances. So while it’s not wrong to want money (we all want things!) it would be wrong to manipulate her.
