OP here. I can’t believe so many places have picked up this story and that there are almost 100k views on Redfin now. I guess even notoriety is good if it drives traffic. That’s a sad situation and a bit of a moral dilemma. What if the kids had abandoned the old man and the housekeeper was the only one caring for him with the promise that she could stay? I think the kids should at least pay her something for taking care of their father and moving out.

Can confirm all of this. I did not post on Reddit, but I know someone who lives close by and vaguely knew both the owner and tenant (not well enough to realize he was sick, though.) House has multiple offers.

Sad, we need more rights to evict squatters and tenants, we forget the true victims the owners and landlords. If you are a squatter or deadbeat tenant you should go to jail and be banned for a set amount of time and be forced to be damages.


As a former landlord who had to evict a tenant, the tenants have more rights to your house than the owner does. You have to jump thru hoops and follow the exact right steps to get them out which still takes months... which really puts you in a bind when they are actively destroying your home and there isnt a thing you can do about it but watch.
