“Lola” in the song is a cross-dresser. Lol.
But today that would be totally fine. Really the song was ahead of its time.
Re Lola, I remember about 15 years ago a 20 year old intern was talking about this song, and was like ",The funny thing is, it's about a transvestite! And all these old people don't even know it and they love this song!" I broke it to her that everyone knows what the song is about, even old people.
I'm not sure why some people, like pp, think Lola is like a subversive secret hidden gem. The lyrics are quite direct.

Joan Jett was covering a Chuck Berry tunes there.

I had never listened to the lyrics of that song before. And omg the video. The singer is full-on creep (but also what's with the guy with the beard and suspenders who answers the door at the start? A great song, one of their best even if you can make it past the lyrical content…..
I have never even heard this song before and I used to love The Kinks back in the day. Was a huge fan of them. This song must be a B side track. It is amazing and timeless. The song is so good that trust me, no one would even care about the questionable words in it.

That "into the night" video is one I wish I had never, ever seen.
