Well, your child must be a real special snowflake! Just kidding, your child has every right to complain, and the reason most children don't is because they have been indoctrinated by their parents that masks are necessary, that they might otherwise get sick or kill someone, that wearing it without complaint shows that you are a good person, and that "anti-maskers" are bad people.

Or, I should add, they don't complain because they have just gotten used to it and everybody does it at school. My kids don't complain either even though I have never instilled any pro-mask ideology in them, but they sure were thrilled when they could finally unmask at recess this week.

I just think it's irritating to live in a city where people aren't following public health guidance. But who typically say they follow science and experts.

You think they don't care, and I used to think that, too, until my child's teacher told me about the cheers of joy when she announced they wouldn't need to mask at recess anymore. Just because kids don't actively complain doesn't mean they don't care. We just love to tell ourselves that to ease our guilt. It's obviously not a huge a problem as virtual learning (were you blasé about that, too?), but it's not a minor issue either.

I definitely had less of a problem wearing a mask outside to drop my kids off than I did with air-raid drills when I was in elementary school in the '80s. I grew up just outside D.C. It was pretty obvious even to a 10-year-old that our survival in the event of a nuclear war wasn't going to come down to whether we did or didn't follow the protocols.

Straw man comparison. Nobody truly cared about wearing a mask at drop-off, except for what it signified regarding the masking policy at school overall. What we do care about is what our kids have to do, which is wear a mask *all day* indoors.

And I too grew up with a fear of nuclear war. That was terrible, but it is completely irrelevant to the mask discussion. If I had had to mask all day back then and learn to view my classmates as disease vectors, that would have been pretty terrible, too. The threat of nuclear war, by the way, has never been as high as right now. Thankfully, we aren't doing drills for it at school. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't remove the other burdens we are placing on our kids right now.

Nobody doubts your existence, but you have got to be in a small minority. Why would anyone mask outdoors, a practice we have known to be pointless for almost two years unless you are huddling closely in a crowd, but be indifferent if the indoor mandate at school were dropped? Unless you don't have kids at school? You are obviously under no obligation to explain yourself to anybody, but you can't be surprised if people who see you will assume you want kids to keep masking indoors if you do it outdoors.
