I wouldn't be so quick to assume anything political or that there was much science or health consciousness from the kids about whether they masked or unmasked. I know many students who have told me they want to keep the mask because they can hide and be less self conscious about looks/makeup/pimples, etc

My kid said it was about half masked, unmasked at our local ES located in Vienna.

Kindergarten - 7 unmasked out of 22 present while I was there (unmasked) volunteering with my kid’s class for library. Librarian also unmasked for most of the class.

Meanwhile, at the same school…

2nd grade - 0 unmasked out of 23. My child would have gone unmasked but felt uncomfortable taking it off if no one else was.

Little kids have potentially more to gain (learning to read) and tolerate masks less well per WHO. So it makes sense.

My son said only a few kids in his HS classes were unmasked.

So here is the problem. You assume a teacher is not empathetic because they kept mask off. Mask use isn’t tied to how nice or kind of a person you are. Remember how we could follow the damn science and do all the things and not wear a mask?


I wasn’t saying the teacher was being empathetic for wearing a mask. What I appreciated is that the teacher tried to consider each student’s POV and figured if a particular student had a mask on then that student might prefer the teacher had one on when helping them.

My high schooler is excited to have made it onto a team and doesn’t want to miss playing time by catching covid so she’s choosing to keep her mask on.
