Price aside (I now that's an impossible ask on this forum), would you prefer the gold or silver teardrop at 21?

Agree that it depends on the individual, and also that trends change, so while yellow gold is in right now, white gold/silver tone may very well be back in fashion in 10 years. I think both are classic. Personally, I'd prefer white gold/rhodium plate over silver because it won't tarnish and with infrequent wear, you probably won't need to get it replaced.

That should have said REPLATED, not replaced. Damn you autocorrect!!

I think this sounds like a great way to make sure she gets something she will wear and for you to spend some quality time together. My favorite aunt used to take me to dinner and shopping for my bday and they are some of my fondest memories.

From OP's perspective, I wouldn't want someone to see that I was using a gift card on something that I was buying as a gift.

Yes -- oils from your body from frequent wear help silver NOT tarnish. That's why silver rings/earrings that get frequent wear don't tarnish. I prefer gold and I don't wear silver very often, so it tarnishes and then I don't want to wear it because it's a pain to clean

I mean, of course it’s not protected, but polishing silver—esp something with no crannies like those Peretti earrings—is really more of a life skill than posts here suggest. IDK, do these folks complain about also having to brush their teeth?

NP but I'm not buying teeth, I'm buying jewelry and I'd rather spend more on something that lasts than something that turns black. Not a very good comparison, if you ask me.

Seems like that’s the explanation, it’s a stable of known pieces at know price points.

I think that's an individualized preference more than an age preference.

OP, Tiffany's is fine, but I would buy gold over silver. Silver tarnishes if you don't wear it every day. I love the Paloma Picasso necklace a friend gave me for my 21st, but I hate having to clean it before I wear it. I store it properly, swap out the silver strips, in a plastic bag, but it tarnishes badly in months.

Between that and what is trendy now, I would buy gold for your niece. A few choices from Tiffany's:
