FCPS should have a page that explains this. Not just make it a footnote five on their page for graduation.

Shouldn't they have another subtopic page from this page on elective sequencing?

+1 very poor planning. They should be explaining it to all rising 9th graders.
They are explaining it. Your kids just aren't listening.
My kids aren’t rising freshman yet. I just happened to be reading the graduation requirements and saw the tiny footnote at the bottom with no further explanation. Parents need to be told of the requirements, not just the kids. It seems there is a communication failure. None of the high school parents I know knew of this requirement.
Our HS has an example of course sequencing for kids, including those who want to get the IB diploma. It also has links explaining the program. And it also provides links to other programs like the academy. I think they also have a program for parents/incoming freshmen in the spring. The information is available. What else do you want?

My current Junior has this requirement. They took two sequential Theater classes Freshman and Sophmore year. I would advise going directly to cpunselor(better yet have your kid ask counselor) There may be a few sequential electives that may not be obvious.Anonymous wrote:OP here, before this thread turns into a 10 page political discussion, I still hope for more replies to my question with some facts or personal experience, like what your kid is taking to satisfy this requirement

Foreign Language is an elective but doesn't count in this sequential calculation.
So my kid could have taken AP CS A in 9th but did programming in 9th and then AP CS A in 10th to meet this requirement. Was it a waste of time? Yes. Did it satisfy the requirement? Also, yes.
Your kid didn't have to do that. My kid took AP CS as a sophomore and then Adv Data Structures as a senior. That satisfies the requirement. My other kid took CS Programming and then Game Design. That worked too.
Our counselor was very clear that core classes and foreign languages do not count. But band/choir/orchestra count... even if they start at the highest level in 9th grade. They are still taking sequential years of band/choir/orchestra.
This is good to know.
There are 4 core courses, plus a world language, so that leaves 3 slots open for electives?

Our schools doesn't have Game Design or Adv data Structures so yes he did.
