Universities no longer allow respectful discourse. Nor do they tolerate “wrongthink.”

Um - you could try maybe accepting his apology and giving him a chance, instead of canceling his career?

His “career” has not been canceled. No one has a divine right to any job, not even the pope.

But more specifically, he still has a job at Georgetown. He’s been placed on leave, which should be interpreted in this case as getting grounded by the Dean for his immature behavior, not for the things that he said.

As a white, conservative Republican he’s been given a lot more grace than Georgetown Law would afford anyone else who has publicly embarrassed the school and been insubordinate and disrespectful to the Dean.

Libertarians are “conservative Republicans??”

He’s now deleted his old tweets. But he’s rather consistently a partisan hack for Republicans. In any case, “libertarian” nowadays only means Republican who is in favor of the legalization of drugs and sex with minors.

And as is typical of cancel culture: it is based on lies. Ilya is in no way a racist! Just because you disagree with his politics does not give you the right to lie about him or make baseless claims of racism.

I am reporting this thread. It should be deleted.

I am starting to think the definition of cancel culture is being held accountable for your words and actions.

If you don’t like the word “cancelled,” just substitute the identical-meaning “held accountable.”

It’s different because it’s spelled with different letters than cancelled.

No, it's Mao's Cultural Revolution.

I know him as well. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to smear him this way.

You know he is brilliant. At least admit what you know.

And Georgetown recognizes talent. Plus, Ilya is no racist - if you know him then you know that too.

Our mutual friend/ acquaintance has now been cancelled.

His reputation smeared, possibly permanently. His career destroyed.

This debacle is political oppression. Sure, hang your argument on a tweet (since deleted and apologized for). But we all Ilya was cancelled because of his political views and work for a Libertarian think tank.

Think about that: libertarian.

Did you read “The Crucible” in high school? Were you taught it was really about the 1950’s political oppression under McCarthy?

A modern witch-hunt is playing out before our eyes in this country, and it is leading us down a very dark and ugly path toward tyranny.

Cancelling Ilya is not a victory; it is a major blow to freedom, liberty, and diversity of thought (something Universities once championed).

He didn't get cancelled, he was held accountable. I would fire any employee who wrote that text. He's not a professor with tenure, he's an administrator. He forgot what his job was - to do his job and not piss off all constituencies.

It was a disgusting comment. I can't believe people are defending this DB.
