Yeah, no it's not UMC white people who are murdering and carjacking in this city. This is just nonsense. Most poor people don't go around murdering and carjacking and assaulting either. Stop trying to blame "whiteness" for sociopathic behavior. For all races, one of the highest risk factors for criminal behavior is single parent family structure --and DC has one of the highest rates of single parent households. I'm all for arguments about better community policing, improving public education, and the like, but guess who is paying the highest taxes to fund those who don't work and don't give back to society and to whom most of those dollars are sent? The UC and UMC people (who are not all white, by the way) whom you are trying to pathologize here.

So the solution here is patriarchy? Is that what you are saying? Property crimes for things that can be easily replaced are not worth the future of our children spending years in jail due to a mistake they made as a kid.

There's nothing entertaining about this senseless death or the fact that car crimes go so undeterred in th District. Our car was stolen a few years back and you'd be shocked at how little the city cares - the video surveillance is for tickets not for car crimes, the parking people don't talk to the impounding people who don't talk to the police (by talk, I mean their systems for tracking license plates don't talk). It's left to the citizen to track down their own vehicle and/or sort it out with insurers. Some steps have been taken such as re-standing a car theft unit and FINALLY coordinating more with MD and VA, but they need to use cameras and license plate readers far more effectively. As to deterrence, our city council needs to address youth "rehab" laws. Apparently no one is being actually "rehabbed". Where is the accountability and follow up for outcomes on these "second chance" programs? I'd like to see the Council, Allen Silverman et Al, actually look at what happens while these car jackings kids are in the system and create some wickets for them to be released to the public again, with much greater supervision and conditions.

No amount of “discussion” can change a culture of ignorance and criminality. It would be like trying to persuade Asians or Europeans that education is detrimental. All you can do is stand back, enjoy the entertainment, and try not to become collateral damage.

Can you not talk about both? Why do either or? And by the way, both the Uber driver and the doctor were not "white people". They were just productive law abiding people. Is that synonymous in your mind with white? The young man killed at the gas station on Conn Ave was productive, law abiding and African. This type of crime doesn't discriminate, though AAs are disproportionately killed and AA communities want to get to the bottom of it; they're the ones begging for more help with this issue.

This is horrific. What a terrible waste. I’m so sorry for his family.

Extremely sad to hear this. My kids go to Oyster adams. Right there. What a lively intersection at 8 pm any evening. That this happened to such a good guy is tragic.

This is a terrible story and not to derail this but Oyster Adam’s is not close to 18th and Florida? Like not close at all.

I almost threw up when I saw this story. And not that any person matters more than another, but at a time when we need medical professionals more than ever. Devastating that a kid from Ohio working hard in DC for the people of DC was murdered so senselessly.
