I hate to be crass but you probably don’t get it. And that’s ok. The mores are just different than your demographic. The money is for most a very small part of their budget, so that’s not typically part of the private school thinking equation. They went, their parents went, and their kids will go private.
Either that or you are talking about the bottom of the class and the best options are Clemson or Goucher.

under your thinking, why do anything if it doesn't have a direct return?
Why pay for your kid to have piano lessons if they're not going to be a concert pianist?
Why have them play travel soccer if they're going to play in Europe?
I don't understand your world view.

Because it’s not about “getting into a school” it’s about living each day and having a great experience at Visi, or STJ, or stone ridge or holy cross. Each child shadows a schools, finds one that will make the next 4 years the best for that specific child.
Why pay $3500/year got club soccer if you are not playing in college? Because they like it.
Also $40K isn’t all that much, if it were then you would possibly have other more pressing priorities.
PP. Thanks. I was under the assumption that these higher priced WERE about getting into a school. Guess I stand corrected.
