Mistake on the Lake is a well-known put down/reference to Cleveland. Because it was a desolate, rust belt Sh-- hole. I grew up not far from there.
It has improved in parts. But it's not on par with other cities like Pittsburgh or Columbus, which are diverse, vibrant, and who have done a LOT to make their cities an attractive place to live for those other than Northeast Ohio locals. In short, it's not for everyone.
OP's original question was about Case Western not Cleveland. It is amazing how some folks are so comfortable issuing judgement based on an hours visit and looking at the faces of the students walking by. Anyone can argue ad nauseum about how great or horrible a city is in comparison to another. It is understood that you do not like Cleveland and some folks did not think Case is for their kids but I am curious where is this animosity coming from?
What are you even talking about? There are several posts about the local Cleveland area on here and the above is relevant to those. Most appear to be from people who are not familiar with the area, historically or now. It was a rust belt sh--hole. That does not mean I have animosity to say that. I did not coin "mistake on the lake."
Saying Cleveland was not a thriving or clean city is a fact (fire on the Cuyahoga river?) There are parts of Cleveland that are much nicer now. I have lots of friends and relatives who still live in and near there. Some love it. Some do not. I personally find it bland and uninteresting. But, others have found things they like...
Why are you so defensive about someone's views of Cleveland?
NP here. You do realize the fire on the Cuyahoga River was in 1969, right? It seems odd to me to mention something that happened over 50 years ago.
That said, my sister went to CWRU and loved it. She has lots of amazing friends from there.
I went to grad school there and also liked it and have a lot of life long friends from there.
Academically, you have to work hard (and it’s probably harder than when my sister and I attended), but there is fun to be had.
Cleveland is not a dream but there are a lot of things to do, people are super friendly and COL is very reasonable.

It was. But it often isn't used that way.

It is! Completely.
We felt that way also after our visit. Interestingly, we visited U of Rochester shortly after, which I think is in the same academic sphere, and he loved it and felt like the vibe was much more relaxed. Maybe he's right, but it's so hard to get a sense from a quick visit.

As an alum, I don't know what toxic competition you are referring to but when I was there everyone worked hard for their grades. Similar to your husband, my path led to a top graduate program as it did for many of my friends and then some amazing opportunities. I will gladly send my DC to Case and I know so will all my friends who were with me provided the kids can get in and are interested to go there. I had an amazing 4 years at Case and can't be any happier about my college experience.

My husband went to Case. He absolutely hated the toxic competition between everyone. His parents made him go because he had a full academic scholarship. He got into a top engineering graduate program and has had a very impressive career. But he would NEVER encourage anyone to go to Case.
