Our league has rec and travel. For U9, I think it was around $1800 for travel (and the nutjob coach is free wth purchase). I am sure many pay more than that. $3,000 seems really expensive to me.

Girls ECNL (Loudoun, McLean, BRYC, VDA) is $10k+ per year if you include travel to tournaments.

I think it’s really expensive too, but not unheard of

Ouch. I assumed around $1000 for the year, like an academy team. Yikes.

Now I am also curious! Is it as expensive as travel?

That said, even with that disadvantage to the rec teasm the Barca teams weren't able to capitalize. So no harm, no foul. It wouldn't be fun to see a travel team come in an clobber everyone, but if it's competitive and on level, why not?

I heard the Barca team beat rec teams badly in the U11 age group at that tournament.

Which ones? Here's the final standings:

Final
NVSC Blue (champions) - 3
FPYC White (Finalists) - 1

Loudoun White (Champions) - 3
SYA (Finalists) - 1

Final
Champion GFRSC
Finalist SYC

Champion FPYC BLACK
Finalist VIenna

Final
U11 Girls (upper bracket Teams ranked 1-6)
Champions A12 GFRSC Dragons
Finalists A4 McLean
Final Score 1-1, 3-2 PK’s

U11 Girls (bottom bracket Teams ranked 7-13)
Champions A2 Loudoun White
Finalists A11 FCSC Strikers
Final Score 3-1

I don't even see a Barca team in the final 4.

Maybe in some games, but they didn’t make the final - https://www.herndonyouthsoccer.org/u112018

Because the level of competition is even. None of those “curated teams with expensive coaches” even won their flights, which leads me to believe that what truly would’ve been unfair, is to put those teams in a regular travel tournament, because clearly they’re only ready to compete against ‘Rec allstars.’ The rec players just played a competitive season, while this tournament was the first competition the FCB teams were participating in. You need to get over yourself.

Anonymous wrote:^^Agree. Maybe they should call it the “developmental” tournament or something. I don’t love pitting curated teams with expensive coaches who play together all year against random gaggles of rec players coached by whatever parent the rec league scrounged up at the last minute.

Ok folks, I have to say. I have seen rec teams that did stay together for years. Sometimes, that parent coach can be a guy who played at a high level in college or something and knows how to run a practice. I've seen some solid rec teams with kids that maybe even should play travel based on ability, but whose parents won't commit the time and money. So they play rec. I've seen those rec teams enter lower level travel tournaments and win.

So, at the lower levels, lines can get blurred.
