Westfield reps live well on the south side of 50--no where near KAA.
Chantilly reps live on the south end of Chantilly boundary,
Oakton reps do not live in this area either. Appear to live near Oakton High School..
South Lakes reps appear to live in Reston which is not in Carson boundary--at least I don't think any live in Carson boundary.

There may be reps on BRAC from organizations who do live in this area, but I do not know of any.

So, are the decisions about KAA leaving out the opinions and wishes of those who most need and want it?

Very few students from Carson go to SLHS. It is the Fox Mill kids, which is around 80 kids, and some kids from Floris. It might be 160 kids from Carson that go to SLHS and I think that is pretty high.

The families we know at Chantilly want to stay at Chantilly but screwing over the entire area and trying to push a magnate school and not making KAA a neighborhood school is wrong. I would hope that there is serious push back on this idea. If they move the four schools whose base school is Carson, Fox Mill, Floris, McNair, and Coates you would have a good mix for KAA.

You are missing Crossfield. Crossfield is the only school whose base is Carson but whose HS is Oakton. Fox Mill Kids should move to Hughes and stay at South Lakes.

Everyone in the county is paying for KAA and entitled to have an opinion about its future use, especially given the broader implications that affect other areas.

You’re also allowed to have a different view. It’s not like every community in other pyramids is fully represented by their BRAC members.

Fox Mill has about 80 kids per grade. All of Fox Mill feeds to Carson, and all of Fox Mill feeds to South Lakes.

But Fox Mill sends kids to Oak Hill for AAP and gets kids for JI. On balance, the real number of in-bound Fox Mill kids at the school is closer to 70 per grade. Multiply that by four and that is about 280 South Lakes kids zoned to Fox Mill/Carson.

It's harder to estimate the number from Floris since it's a split feeder but we know that Thru didn't propose to eliminate the split feeder, which means that at least 25% of Floris goes to Carson/South Lakes. Floris has about 100 kids per grade and on average loses about 6 kids to other schools, so the real number of in-bound Floris kids at the school is closer to 106. Muliplying that by .25 gets you about 26 kids, and multiplying that by four gets you an additional 104 South Lakes kids zoned to Floris/Carson.

This suggests moving the Fox Mill and Floris kids now at South Lakes to KAA would pull about 384 kids out of South Lakes before any adjustment was made for kids attending TJ or pupil placing.

Based on where the BRAC members reside, they’re either (a) recommending a magnet because they want in on the new school too or (b) are cognizant of the fact a neighborhood school would drastically impact enrollment numbers at Westfield creating a large shift in programming and/or boundary adjustments south of 50.

IE Chantilly doesn’t want to move to Westfield and Westfield doesn’t want to risk losing half their student body.

Chantilly families might not want to move to KAA, either.

None of that is surprising. They were never going to suddenly spring for a new school that wasn’t even planned in the CIP for another decade without controversy.

Region 5 doesn’t even include Centreville, and there are also CVHS families who’ll oppose getting moved to Westfield as part of boundary shifts if KAA opens as a regular school.

Once more, there are no BRAC reps from the area that would likely be covered by the area that would attend KAA.

The only Chantilly neighborhood in consideration would likley be happy with a move if it is a traditional high school. They would likely be happy to stay at Chantilly, but THRU has proposed moving some to Oakton which is quite a hike and most would not want that.

But, once more, there are no reps on BRAC from the KAA area. Don't you think they should have a say?

And, I would suggest that those who think that area going to Westfield is good to come take a drive from Carson to Westfield and tell us if you think the area is part of the Westfield community. And, Carson is closer to Westfield than most of the neighborhoods than most of its students. You will pass by the airport and through industrial and commercial areas. You will not pass any residential areas. The Carson kids are isolated from the rest of Westfield.

You just keep repeating yourself. Take your blinders off and recognize that what you think is good for you may elicit different feelings among others.

Suggest you do the same. I don't think taking kids out of their community is a good thing if there is another option. And, there is.
