On the 20th day of the shutdown, the GOP group tried to jump start bipartisan talks before Trump declares a national emergency to get his wall. But the president rejected their idea to allow congressional committees to sort out his border wall request while the government reopened, deeming the idea likely to leave him with nothing to show for the shutdown.
Vice President Mike Pence and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney had been consulting with senators about the matter on Thursday. Pence and Mulvaney took the idea to the president, who shot it down, according to multiple people directly involved in the talks. While the congressional committees could still take up Trump's border wall plan, the president opposes the idea of opening the government before serious wall negotiations have begun, the people said. He told Senate Republicans he believes he is winning the fight and will not sign any stopgap bills at this point.
"I think we're stuck. I just don't see a pathway forward. I don't see a way forward," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who had been leading the effort. "I have never been more depressed about moving forward than I am right now. I just don’t see a pathway forward."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday blocked two House-passed funding bills that would reopen the federal government.
Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), surrounded by roughly two dozen of their Senate Democratic colleagues, tried to get consent to bring up a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through Feb. 8, as well as a separate package that would fund the remaining agencies without current-year appropriations through Sept. 30.
But McConnell objected, arguing they would be “show votes”.

Not at all. But OP seemed to want an honest answer, so I tried my best to give her one. The truth is there’s not much that the OP or anyone else can do about it, other than perhaps phone their representatives daily and demand that they approve the money for the wall. Otherwise this very likely will drag on and on.
Oh, so that’s why you used laughing emojis?
My cousin works not in the DMV and has a FR position with the TSA. She’s a single parent to a 2 year old, and is responsible, reserved, kind. She should be in this position because you think it’s hilarious to have someone CURRENTLY working for zero pay in national security because you think it’s just marvelous to joke about six more years.
The cruelty of you supporters - don’t bother lying, it’s unbecoming - is f-cking amazing.
New poster. It’s easier if you just accept that this is truly who these people always have been. Trump has simply given them permission to be open about it. Trump supporters are hate filled mostly because they live in a fear paradigm. Compassion and empathy are foreign to them. You will not convince the 30% of people who still support him of anything. You are not the idiot whisperer. It’s easier to just focus on the people who matter.

False crisis, you mean like the food pantries preparing to serve coast guard members? https://connectingvets.radio.com/articles/food-banks-support-coast-guard-families-through-government-shutdown
Or the food safety inspections that aren't taking place? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/09/health/shutdown-fda-food-inspections.html
Or the increase in TSA agents calling in sick? https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/tsa-agents-calling-out-sick-government-shutdown
Or the damage to our beautiful national treasures in places like Joshua Tree and Yellowstone?
Or the contractors and small businesses that are losing money and won't get it back?
Or the families that are shut out of Smithsonian museums?
One thing I do know is the shutdown will cost a sh!t ton of money to taxpayers, as people like me and others have to work overtime to make up for the weeks we lost. My job has constant deadlines and I'm going to have work late nights to meet them once I return. And that's time and a half.
Never mind the lost revenue at national parks and museums.
The stupidity is mindboggling.
First world problems...
Meanwhile tell the 32 families that died in Texas at the hands of illegals in 2018 that their grief is "stupid" and "mindboggling".
What will you tell the families whose children die of e coli infections or whose planes crash because there aren't enough air traffic controllers willing to work for free because you're too busy playing politics to run the Government like a civilized country?
That's easy - I would tell them to self identify as one of the 58 genders on facebook and the left will give you free healthcare and a livable wage for the rest of their life. Meanwhile the Constitutional Republic will continue to erode.
Sure, and the 32 people killed and Texas should have defended themselves with their AR-15s. Nanny staters like you are kidding yourselves if you think the government can actually protect you from anything.
Thank God for the 2nd amendment for those who choose to protect themselves from anyone! Meanwhile the goalpost strategy of Pelosi in her presser just now isn't lost on the 63 million who voted for 45.
As opposed to the 66 million who voted for the other candidate.
Thank God the founding fathers created the electoral college to protect control by the few for the masses! I can go on all day...
Sure you can. Buty the one thing you can't do is cite the 63 million who voted for Spanky as a justification for him doing whatever he wants because you think it represents the will of the people or "the masses."
Also you might want to take a math class. Because in this case, "the few" represents the 63 million who voted for your candidate and "the masses" represents 66 million who voted for the other. To put it in laymen's terms: 66 million is greater than 63 miillion. Which means a smaller group of Americans determined the direction of the country over the objections of the masses who didn't want that direction.
In 2008, Obama won with a majority of 52.9% and 69 million votes - only 6 million more than Trump got in 2016. The media and Obama called it a "MANDATE" and lied and cheated (Cornhusker kickback comes to mind) to get the votes for Obamacare passage. What is different than now and why isn't this campaign promise called a Mandate?
Meanwhile back on planet earth, 79% of Americans polled believe we need better border security.

Their grief is terrible, as is the grief of the thousands of families who lose loved ones to gun violence every single year. I'm sure you agree and because you are so concerned about the grief of those who lose loved ones to violence, I'm you would also agree that their grief is not worth the lack of limits on 2nd amendment rights.
The shutdown is still mindbogglingly stupid and costing the nation millions of dollars, and is completely unnecessary. Trump is a self-styled master negotiator. If he were a true master negotiator, he should sign the bill that the house and senate passed last year (that now has to be resubmitted) in order to re-open the government, and negotiate his border security solutions separately. If you disagree you must be admitting he is not a great negotiator but a fraud.
As if the Democrats would do that. All they want to do is destroy and discredit Trump.
