If Romney was at the top of the ticket, he would be more likely to get Republican/Independent votes than Democrats support him. That would hurt Trump not help him. Most voters do not cast their vote based on the VP nominee with perhaps some exceptions (LBJ helping JFK in Texas).
Who knows what would happen in a 5-candidate race (Biden, Trump, Kennedy, West, Romney)? Right now, Trump is on track to win.

Stop trying to fool people with this non-sense. And stop with the Trump boogie man candidate. He will be lucky if he’s even allowed to run or have time to campaign. The GOP has no one and will lose by more with No Labels campaigning against them. This is good.
If the Dems lose, it’s of their own doing. Provided the President doesn’t have a major health crisis, he should win even with the VP hanging on. He could send troops to the Middle East, and he’d still win. (That would really splinter the party, but having both parties implode simultaneously in the presidential race would be a good way to rejuvenate this country.)
No Labels is funded by right wing money. If you think they will run a candidate to split the GOP vote, you are sorely mistaken.
Yet, we are told time and again on this board that Manchin is a closet Republican. No doubt he’d appeal to never Trump GOPer, independents and moderates of both parties.
If Biden will indeed the Democrat nominee, then why should Dems worry ESPECIALLY against Trump? If there is soooo much worry about a 3rd party — with or without a candidate — then maybe Biden isn’t a great nominee choice. I wish the Dems would have figured out a back up choice years ago. The hubris there is ridiculous. Of course, I am don’t believe Trump will be the GOP nominee.
You don’t think the guy who has been leading the GOP field by 30 points for the entire race is going to win it? What’s going to suddenly bring him down?
Legal issues.
They've been trying to get Trump on "legal" issues for 7 years and it hasn't worked. What makes you think it's going to work this time? At some point, you have to ask yourself "maybe the guy really didn't do anything at all and we are just watching lawfare play out?"
Really? The guy has lost more cases than I can count.
Is he in jail? Has he paid ludicrous fines? Are cases in appeal? Have many of the cases been overturned?
He was never criminal prosecuted before the latest cases, which haven’t gone to trial yet, so he could not have gone to jail. But he’s paid huge amounts in damages after being found liable for everything from rape to defamation to fraud.
