We have proof of how Trump would have been tougher and more skilled in dealing with Putin, in the transcripts of their calls. Biden won't release them because he doesn't want people to know.

Sounds like Mitch McConnell is on board with sanctions in response to Russia's European invasion. Ron DeSantis is waffling.

I don't see a scenario where Putin COULD stop without losing face and looking weak. My guess is he wants to reestablish the former USSR. It is terrifying. I'm sure the name Chamberlain has been invoked myriad times this month.

Anyone remember that Biden gaffe?

It was not false. Biden negotiated away those 2 regions several months ago. The Biden/Putin plan was always to let Russia have those 2 regions.

Nothing else will happen if Russia stops there.

Try again.

Jon Finer, the US deputy national security adviser, told CNN an invasion of Ukraine is underway. "An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway," Finer said.

Also,

Russia's upper house of parliament has given President Putin permission to use military force outside the country.

In a letter to the Russian upper house of parliament, President Putin formally asked lawmakers to approve the use of Russian military force outside the country.

The move formalizes a Russian military deployment to Moscow-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, a day after Putin recognized their independence.

- and Putin factored those in before he decided to invade.

The sanctions matter not at all. They are literally meaningless.

And before you post “what about Washington DC?” the US government is not claiming that Ukraine is historically and culturally a subregion of our country.

Ha! Love it.

Petty and meaningless, so it's sure to get under Putin's skin

The guy who thinks he's the second coming of Peter the Great isn't going to like that.

Peter the Great moved the capital of the Russian Empire to St. Petersburg from Moscow where it remained until the socialists took over.

Peter the Great was also deeply concerned with Russia’s modernization and forced this through integration with the west. Many Slavic ethno-nationalists hate him for his western inspired reforms and policies.

AN ‘INVASION’ OR NOT? — As of Monday night, the White House was refusing to call this an “invasion”

Everyone's on the same page. It's an invasion.
The Biden Administration is now calling Russia’s actions “an invasion.”
Deputy NSA Jon Finer told CNN:
“An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

Let's see if they impose those "unprecedented sanctions" they have been talking about for months.

Seems as if so far, they have only sanctioned people in Ukraine. What about the damn Russians?

My God, Robert Gates was right. He can't get anything right when it comes to foreign policy (or domestic policy, for that matter).

+1 I cannot believe this bumbling idiot is the leader of the United States and is leading us into a war. It has to be so he can divert attention away from the economy, take us into military industrial complex level spending, and blame “Russian interference” for the primaries.

Sit down. Biden is dealing with more moving parts than you are capable of understanding.

No, I won’t sit down. Biden isn’t capable of dealing with moving parts. We all know he isn’t in charge here. Remember when Putin annexed Crimea under Obama? And remember when Obama told Romney he was stupid to think Russia was our greatest adversary? And remember when everyone was terrified Trump would get us into a world war and it never happened? Putin knows weakness when he sees it. He knows Biden will follow Obama era policy.

And, the debacle in Afghanistan sealed the deal as far as Putin was concerned.

The only moving parts Biden is capable of dealing with are the moving parts that result in his daily constitutional. And, even those moving parts are occasionally tough for him to handle.

Uh you DO know that it was Trump who signed the deal handing Afghanistan over to the Taliban, right?

Uh You DO know that Democrats in Congress wanted all troops out of Afghanistan. Trump never would have removed equipment before troops and civilians. The CF that happened in Afghanistan was Biden’s doing. I don’t even like Trump, but you’re delusional if you blame Trump for the overwhelming failure of Biden’s decisions in Afghanistan. Putin saw what happened too. He knows he can do whatever he wants.

Oh please. And you do know that Republicans wanted us to stay indefinitely and waste trillions more?

Trump had zero coherent plan for Afghanistan. Had he been responsible for the withdrawal, it would have been even more rushed, with even less planning. And worse yet, he said he would have destroyed the Afghan National Army's equipment, meaning an even bigger betrayal and even faster collapse to the Taliban. The idiot wasn't even aware that most of the equipment he was talking about wasn't "US equipment" and that it had been transferred to the Afghan National Army over the span of the 20 years prior. https://theweek.com/afghanistan/1004326/trump-bomb-the-hell-out-of-us-equipment-left-behind-in-afghanistan Trump also shut down the SIV offices that were processing papers needed for translators and other close Afghan allies. Afghanistan withdrawal under Trump would have been far worse of a disaster than it was under Biden. Anyone thinking otherwise is clueless and massively delusional.

Bingo

This is false. He had 4 years to exit Afghanistan but knew it couldn’t be done quickly despite political pressure to stop the “endless war.” This is on Biden’s team and blaming Trump is just stupid. You can blame Trump for a lot of things, but not the Afghanistan disaster.
